Health officials in Newfoundland and Labrador have reported the province’s first probable case of a lung illness related to vaping.

The province’s chief medical officer confirmed Friday that a person became ill in late 2019 after using a cannabis product, which was not available for testing.

The person was hospitalized but has since recovered.

The province did not release further details, citing privacy concerns.

Federal health officials say there have been 16 confirmed or probable cases of vaping-associated lung illnesses reported across Canada, not including the Newfoundland and Labrador case.

The City of Winnipeg is reporting cannabis-related emergency calls almost doubled last year compared with those in 2018 — although it has yet to define the cause.

This year, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) has received and responded to two patients in distress who said they had consumed cannabis-infused edibles, according to city officials.

In 2019, the WFPS reported receiving a total of 42 calls in which the caller reported having consumed cannabis-infused edibles. That almost doubled the number in 2018, when the WFPS reported receiving 23 edibles-related calls.

In 1972, 20 women were placed in two groups in isolation in a downtown hospital. Ten of the participants were instructed to smoke cannabis every night over the course of 98 days, with increasing THC potency over time. The other 10 study participants remained sober. All were given tasks to focus on during the day — like making braided macrame belts and wall hangings —while researchers observed their behaviour. The goal of the Ontario government-funded study, dubbed Project Venus, was to find out if cannabis affected productivity.

The Ontario Cannabis Store was entirely sold out of its new edible products about five hours after they went on sale online Thursday morning.

OCS said that at 8:59 a.m. it had roughly 3,000 customers in its "digital lobby" waiting for the new products to become available online.

"In less than half an hour, we were sold out of the soft chew category and other edible products were becoming very limited," OCS communications director Daffyd Roderick told CBC News in an email.

All edibles were sold out by around 2 p.m.

"We now have no edibles available, but still have reasonable stock of vape cartridges and batteries," Roderick said.

Researchers may be closing in on exactly why cannabis is so good at countering anxiety.

A new study, published in the journal Neuron, explains that there is an anxiety generating superhighway in the brain that connects the amygdala, the brain’s emotional centre, with the prefrontal cortex, where decision making and impulse control are managed.

The more stressful the situation a person finds themselves in, the more firmly these two areas of the brain connect, quickly elevating anxiety.

Thanks to changes in WADA policies, Olympic athletes can use CBD legally for the first time.

A new champion will be crowned when the 2020 Summer Olympics debut in Tokyo. We’re not talking gold medals or world records, though. Instead, a new presence will be felt for the first time legally at the Olympics—cannabidiol, or CBD.

The World Anti-Doping Agency, an organization that monitors and fights against the use of drugs in the Olympics, announced in 2018 that CBD had been removed from its list of banned substances. Since the organization’s formation in 1999, all cannabinoids like CBD and THC had been banned for all Olympic athletes. The 2020 Olympics represents the first games in which athletes can legally use CBD without fear of consequence.
