Clear regulations needed for medical, recreational marijuana: Wynne

TORONTO -- Ontario is looking for federal government guidance on regulating clinics that sell medical marijuana and on how pot should be sold for recreational use once it's legalized.

The federal Liberals promised in this month's throne speech to "legalize, regulate and restrict access to marijuana" to keep it out of the hands of children while also denying criminals the financial profits.

The new government plans to remove possession of small amounts of marijuana from the Criminal Code and create new laws to more severely punish those who provide it to minors or drive while under its influence.

Aims

To assess the associations between types of cannabis control policies at country level and prevalence of adolescent cannabis use.

Conclusions

Cannabis liberalization with depenalization and partial prohibition policies was associated with higher levels of regular cannabis use among adolescents. The correlations were heterogeneous between genders and between short- and long-terms.

The new prime minister of Canada, who campaigned on legalizing marijuana, said Thursday that he wants the country to take the time it needs to get the details right and that it’s important for the government make its cannabis policy decisions for the right reasons.

Ending prohibition “was never about a money maker. It was always about public health, public safety,” said Justin Trudeau, who was sworn in as the head of Canada’s federal government last month.

The three-video campaign, titled “You’re worse on weed”, has so far backfired, as measured by the response on social media, which is where many among the target audience dwell. It trended impressively on Twitter for unintended reasons.
