Will Canada Become Pot Tourism Destination? Don't Count on It, Eh

Despite incoming Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's vow to legalize recreational marijuana "right away," travelers thinking of heading north to get high are in for a buzz kill.

While Trudeau's plans to legalize pot have sparked a gold-rush mentality among pot proponents and enthusiasts, regulations and tax rules are likely years away, experts say. Even then, it's not clear whether legality will lead to a significant marijuana tourism industry, given the onward march of legalization efforts in the U.S.

US gives Caribbean region good review for religious freedom

Jamaica’s Rastafarians complain of barriers

WASHINGTON, USA (CMC) — So accustomed to annual scathing reports on human rights practices and drug trafficking, Caribbean Community (Caricom) countries have received what can be considered overall favourable and rare review of their religious practices by the United States.

In its International Religious Freedom Report for 2014, released here earlier this month, the US Department of State said "there were no reports of significant societal actions affecting religious freedom" in most Caricom-member states.

Washington, however, said that some religious groups, such as Rastafarians and Muslims, continued, in some territories, to "express concern about government practices impacting their religious activities."

Activists hope Mexico top court breaks pot ban

Mexico's Supreme Court will debate on Wednesday a citizen group's bid to legally consume marijuana, an effort that activists hope will break pot prohibition in a country beset by drug violence.

The legal battle is being waged by the Mexican Society for Responsible and Tolerant Personal Use, whose Spanish acronym spells "SMART" and which argues that federal laws violate their fundamental right to smoke weed.

While the court's ruling would only apply to SMART, a decision in favor of the cannabis club could open the floodgates for others seeking to legally smoke marijuana in Mexico.

Sanders will propose nixing marijuana from federal list of dangerous drugs

Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders will announce his support Wednesday for removing marijuana from a list of the most dangerous drugs outlawed by the federal government — a move that would free states to legalize it without impediments from Washington.

The self-described democratic socialist senator from Vermont plans to share his proposal during a town hall meeting with college students that will be broadcast on the Internet across the country from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

“Too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana use,” Sanders says in prepared remarks for the event provided to The Washington Post. “That’s wrong. That has got to change.”

Erie moving forward with ban on recreational marijuana businesses

Erie officials are moving forward with a townwide ban on recreational marijuana businesses following heated debate during Tuesday's meeting.

The board was divided over two options aimed at prohibiting marijuana operations in Erie.

An informal tally by Mayor Tina Harris found four officials in favor of the ban and three favoring a yearlong extension of the town's existing moratorium, which expires Dec. 31.

The board did not take an official vote on the ordinance, but asked staff to bring the ban back for a vote at its next meeting Nov. 10.

Journalists at GOP debate in Boulder invited to tour the local marijuana industry

Rolling out the green carpet? Just in case they don’t have enough to do, journalists attending the third Republican debate in Boulder, Colorado on Wednesday have been invited by the thriving local marijuana industry to pay a call on select retailers.

“Coming to the GOP Debate? Meet cannabis industry leaders and go behind the scenes at a local marijuana retail store,” advises the National Cannabis Industry Association which has organized an afternoon tour and meet-and-greet at a local dispensary which sells legal recreational and medicinal pot with such names as Permafrost, Trainwreck and Chunk Diesel.

Nation's First Hemp Bar Shut Down By New York City Regulators

In late September, America got its very first hemp bar, when an establishment called Brooklyn’s Dark Hemp Bar opened in New York City. But not even a month passed before it closed, thanks to demands imposed by regulators from the city’s health department. One possible reason may be that hemp–which can now be legally grown in New York state–is still wrongly perceived as a mind-altering drug, and may have been targeted by the city.

Pot business owner giving marijuana to spice users who destroy their stash

While Municipality of Anchorage leaders are trying to figure out what to do about spice and the many problems that come with it, the co-owner of a local marijuana business is trying to help.

Her approach is somewhat unusual: Free weed. That’s Nicole Crites plan to solve Anchorage’s spice problem.

Destroy your spice in front of her, and she’ll give you twice as much marijuana for free. So far, she’s seen about an ounce and a half discarded.

“Flakes everywhere, and completely saturated with toilet bowl cleaner and disposed of,” she explained. “These are all packaged up in little one-gram, two-gram bags, so that’s quite a bit of spice. I’m happy with that.”

Exactly how and when Justin Trudeau's Liberals will legalize marijuana, we just don't know

Everybody wants success but few know what to do with it. The late American poet Dorothy Parker summarized this contradictory truth best when she wrote: “If I should labor through daylight and dark/Consecrate, valorous, serious, true/ Then on the world I may blazon my mark; And what if I don't, and what if I do?”
