Highs and lows of pot in NZ

A recent visitor from California was astounded at the cloak and dagger nature of cannabis consumption in New Zealand.

Under California State law she, a retired health professional, can openly grow her own medicinal marijuana (strictly for personal use) in the garden along with her roses and courgettes, or buy it from licensed dispensers.

The law takes the drama out of the situation by giving patients with doctors' recommendations safe access without risking arrest. Qualifying conditions include anorexia, arthritis, cancer, HIV/AIDs, glaucoma, migraine, muscle spasms, severe nausea, seizures and any debilitating condition where the use of cannabis has been deemed appropriate.

Maine groups team up on ballot measure to make marijuana legal

BOSTON/SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) – Two groups that had backed competing ballot initiatives to make recreational use of marijuana legal in Maine agreed on Monday to join forces on one measure to put before voters in 2016.

The state is one of six where competing pro-marijuana groups hope to hold referendums on marijuana legalization in 2016, following 2012 votes that legalized the drug in Colorado and Oregon. Attitudes about marijuana in the United States have changed markedly since then, as voters in Washington, Alaska and the District of Columbia have followed suit. Voters in Ohio will weigh in on legalization next month.

We Asked an Expert What Would Happen If the UK Decriminalised All Drugs

Thanks to polymath and biopic-waiting-to-happen, Richard Branson, we know that, this week, the UN were in the final stages of preparing a call for the global decriminalisation of drugs. According to their report, evidence suggests decriminalisation would reduce the number of drug-related deaths without increasing incidents of drug abuse. As such, the Office of Drugs and Crime suggest governments have a duty to change policy to suit the best interests of their citizens.

So far, so sensible.
