Mexico's top court postpones marijuana hearing

Mexico's Supreme Court postponed on Wednesday a much-anticipated hearing on a citizen group's bid to legally smoke marijuana, a potential landmark case in a country beset by drug violence.

While dozens of legalization supporters gathered outside the court in the capital's historic center, a judicial official said the justices decided to delay the debate until next week or a later date.

The case was brought by the Mexican Society for Responsible and Tolerant Personal Use, whose Spanish acronym spells "SMART," which is seeking permission to grow and consume its own pot.

ALCOHOL VS. CANNABIS 2015 (INFOGRAPHIC)

DOES POPULARITY AND APPROVAL DETERMINE WHAT IS BEST? USUALLY NOT. CASE IN POINT: CANNABIS IS BETTER FOR YOU THAN ALCOHOL.

ALTHOUGH MAJORITY OF AMERICANS ARE REPORTED TO BE IN FAVOR OF “MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION”, WHEN IT COMES TO ACCEPTANCE AND APPROVAL RATES, ALCOHOL ALWAYS TAKES THE CAKE.

In 2013, 86.8 percent of people ages 18 or older reported that they drank alcohol at some point in their lifetime; 70.7 percent reported that they drank in the past year; 56.4 percent reported that they drank in the past month. These numbers are staggering compared to the number of Americans who report using cannabis.

Despite Looser Marijuana Laws, No Spike in Teen Use

National data from 2013 show that 70 percent of 10th graders and 81 percent of 12th graders say it would be fairly easy or very easy to obtain marijuana.

SPH study: more time needed to see if rates rise

Since 1996, when California became the first US state to legalize marijuana for medical use, concerns about a possible spike in the number of adolescents using the drug have arisen. Today, 23 states and the District of Columbia have laws legalizing marijuana in some form—five of them, Alaska, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and DC, effectively permit recreational use by adults 21 and older.

Cannabis weed not really seen as a drug, say teens

Cannabis weed is “not really” seen as a drug among teenagers and has become “very acceptable”.

Secondary school pupils surveyed said a bag of weed would cost as little as €20, an ecstasy pill around €5, and a benzodiazepine (tranquilliser) tablet just €1.

Most of the 400 pupils surveyed did not believe alcohol advertisements influenced their choices and felt that drink sponsorship should be allowed to continue.

The research was carried out among 400 15- to 17-year-olds in nine schools in Dublin’s north inner city.

Local groups lobby against Ohio pot amendment

Former state Reps. Matt Huffman (R-Lima) and Vern Sykes (D-Akron) told reporters during an afternoon press conference at the Statehouse Tuesday that proponents of Issue 1 have focused on spreading the word about the reform effort through the dozens of organizations that support the amendment. He denied the character is created to encourage children to use marijuana, and said, “we call it ‘Buddie’s 21-and-up club.'” He noted that 18-year-olds can vote and have an opinion on marijuana, even though they’d be barred from legal recreational use of marijuana until they’re 21.
