Marijuana is a Proven Winner in the Debate on Tobacco vs Weed

n the ongoing debate regarding tobacco vs weed, a new study finds that marijuana is definitely a better way to go. Scientists approached this by using the MOE or margin of exposure comparison method to determine how different substances affect people long-term. They did this by using the ratio between the dose in each that would characterize adverse effects and the amount that people typically use.

The beginning of the end for zero tolerance in schools

Updated Colorado statute allows medical marijuana on school property

Driven by his frustration with New Jersey’s restrictive medical marijuana program, Ricardo Rivera crowd-funded a research trip to Colorado. He wanted more information about extracting cannabis oil for his daughter and a new law that means sick kids can be treated with medical marijuana on school property.

Tatyana “Tuffy” Rivera is 8 years old and completely nonverbal. At 10 months old, she was diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy called Lennox Gastaut Syndrome that can cause up to 300 seizures a day. Her father says the side effects from two dozen pharmaceuticals only made things worse.

Washington: State House passes recreational marijuana reform bill

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - The House on Friday passed a measure that makes several changes to the state's new recreational marijuana market, including eliminating the three-tier tax structure and replacing it with a single excise tax of 37 percent at the point of sale.

House Bill 2136 passed the House on a 59-38 vote and now heads to the Senate for consideration. An amendment that passed Friday removed language from the original bill that would have only allowed local bans on licensed marijuana businesses if approved by the jurisdiction's voters.

‘Cannabis Day’ pot protesters to defy Vancouver’s warning

VANCOUVER – A marijuana activist is vowing to proceed with an annual Canada Day pot protest outside the Vancouver Art Gallery, despite a cease-and-desist letter from the city.

Jodie Emery says “Cannabis Day” has been held for nearly 20 years and typically attracts about 10,000 people who sell, buy and smoke illegal marijuana in the public square.

But she says she and her husband, pot activist Marc Emery, received a letter from deputy city manager Sadhu Johnston earlier this month telling them to stop planning the event because they don’t have a permit.

Emery says organizers have never sought a permit because the annual event is a protest, not a festival, and volunteers previously paid for toilets, security, radios and first aid at the city’s request.

Recreational Marijuana Sales Likely To Start October 1st In Oregon

Oregon voters approved legalizing recreational marijuana during the 2014 Election. The cultivation and possession provisions of the initiative go into effect in less than a week (July 1), but the roll-out of legal sales will have to wait. If some lawmakers in Oregon have their way, the wait would not be that long. A bill that would allow established medical marijuana dispensaries to sell limited amounts of recreational marijuana to adults starting October 1 passed a key hurdle today. Per Oregon Live:

Legal Marijuana Use Research gets NIH funding

TACOMA – Several American states have now legalized recreational marijuana, including Washington, which approved adult use in fall 2012. Yet just how this will affect people’s use of the drug remains uncertain.

Dan Burgard, associate professor of chemistry at University of Puget Sound, is gathering scientific evidence to answer that question, using a pioneering research technique and more than $120,000 in support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health. His three-year research project, which builds on four years of previous work, began in Washington state this month.

So the first "cannabis club" of Uruguay works

The rule legalizing cannabis in Uruguay starts running. While details are being finalized for the state to produce their own marijuana for sale in pharmacies, in recent weeks, the government authorized the legal operation of the first cannabis club in the country.

CNN had access exclusively to the first club to see how it works.

For Martin and Diego growing their own marijuana to smoke in their own club is a dream come true.

"It's a great relief. See it is working and everything is going well not for clubs and growers," says Martin Gaibisso, president of the Club Cannabico El Piso.

His club was the first approved by the Uruguayan authorities, after a year of negotiations and preparations.
