Jamaica: Education Ministry wants prosecution over ganja-laced sweets

The Education Ministry is calling for the authorities to pursue and prosecute vendors who sell sweets laced with ganja to students.

The call from the Education Ministry follows the disclosure last week that students at the privately run Hillel Academy got sick after ingesting ganja through a popular candy.

Thwaites, who is attending an education conference in the Bahamas, is reiterating that the use of ganja, tobacco and alcohol is forbidden in schools.

He says persons who market the products, in any form, to students should be prosecuted.

The Education Minister says he is confident that the administration at Hillel will appropriately deal with the issue.

The Marijuana Market: Everybody Wants A Piece

A lot of people use marijuana because it's fun. But it's also serious business, and last week entrepreneurs looking for a piece of the marijuana market convened at the Cannabis World Congress & Business Expo in New York City. (image credit: Karsten Strauss)

At regular intervals throughout the year, just about every industry takes time out to get its ranks together to network, entertain potential clients and show off new products. The burgeoning U.S. cannabis industry is no different, and the 2015 Cannabis World Congress and Business Exposition, held in New York from June 17-19, displayed more than a few crossover companies: those with know-how in other industries, hoping to show how their products can play a part in the weed world.

Maine Legislature soundly rejects marijuana legalization bills

AUGUSTA, Maine — If Maine is going to “free the weed,” the Legislature wants no part of the process.

Lawmakers in the House and Senate overwhelmingly affirmed on Monday that they would not pass a law to legalize, tax and regulate recreational use of marijuana. The House rejected LD 1380, a bill by longtime legalization advocate Rep. Diane Russell, D-Portland, that would have put the question out for a public vote. The bill was defeated 98-45.

Why is nicotine addictive?

Animals, including human animals, often find themselves in a state of desire. Desire, the felt motivation to pursue a goal, is how nature gets us to go after the things we need: food, sex, shelter, social status, cigarettes. Wait a minute … cigarettes?

Like many other chemical candidates for the wayward human appetite, tobacco attracts. We desire it, despite its bad press. And as a result, it is one of the worst public health disasters the world has ever encountered.

Medical Marijuana Is Often Less Potent Than Advertised

Marijuana at a medical marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles. Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana.

People who buy medical marijuana products might not be getting what they paid for, a study finds. And evidence remains elusive on benefits for most medical conditions, even though almost half the states have legalized medical marijuana.

Kamakhya ushers in annual festival, with annual cannabis problem

District tobacco control nodal officer Samiran Barua on Monday imposed fines on two persons under COTPA (Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act) for smoking in public places.

The five-day Ambubachi Mela began in the Kamakhya temple here from Monday, bringing with it the footfalls as well as the bhang abuse.

Authorities remain unsure how to control rampant consumption of bhang — as cannabis leaves in smoke form are known in Assam — by thousands of sadhus and sanyasis who have arrived from all over the country despite laws banning such consumption.

Marijuana legalization will produce a dizzying array of choices

Consumers of legal marijuana will be confronted with more choices than were ever imagined back when Deadheads got their buzz from joints and pipes.

Sour Diesel, Trainwreck and Blue Dream are some of the vivid names for marijuana strains that reportedly make you want to pucker up, duck for cover or float away to a South Pacific island.

For pot users who don’t want to inhale, there are edibles such as cookies and brownies, as well as tinctures that can be taken under the tongue or in tea.

Feds paying for sewer analysis of pot usage in Washington

SEATTLE — The federal government is chipping in money for a three-year pilot study using sewage samples to determine levels of marijuana use in two Washington cities — research that could help answer some key questions about pot legalization, according to the University of Puget Sound,

The school said Monday that the National Institutes of Health is chipping in $120,000 so Dan Burgard, an associate chemistry professor, can conduct a three-year study that will look at how per-capita pot use changed after Washington's first legal pot shops opened last July.

The research, based on methods first developed by scientists in Italy in 2005, involves analyzing wastewater samples for levels of metabolites produced when the body processes drugs.

How Much Does Marijuana Impact Your Driving?

A new federal study has answers

A rigorous federal research study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse offers new data on the effects of marijuana on driving performance.

The exact impact of marijuana on driving ability is a controversial subject—and it’s become more important states continue to loosen their drug laws. And, while drunk driving is on the decline in the U.S., driving after having smoked or otherwise consumer marijuana has become more common. According to the most recent national roadside survey from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of weekend nighttime drivers, 8.3 percent had some alcohol in their system and 12.6 percent tested positive for THC—up from 8.6 percent in 2007.
