Sativex Cancer Drug Trial Poses Barrier To CBD In The Supplement Industry

In reliance on a drug trial that was announced eight years ago, FDA has determined CBD cannot be marketed as a dietary supplement.

FDA could change its mind, but only if it is provided evidence that CBD was marketed as a supplement or conventional food before GW Pharmaceuticals plc announced that a clinical trial had been initiated in the United States to study Sativex, a drug that was used to treat pain in patients who suffered from advanced cancer. The drug is composed mostly of two cannabinoids: CBD and THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

Pot politics fracture the GOP

Pot policy is splintering the GOP.

GOP support for medical marijuana is on the rise as backers look to couch legalization as a states’ rights issue, while other Republicans are fighting tooth and nail to beat back recreational pot laws like the one approved in Washington, D.C.

The division reflects a political conundrum for the party, which is torn between social conservatives who still see marijuana as a gateway drug, and libertarian-leaning voters who want to legalize pot.

The GOP’s internal conflict has been on full display of late, as Congress has voted on a series of conflicting marijuana measures — frustrating advocates on both sides of the fight over legal pot.

Watch: How to Legally Invest in Marijuana Companies

Score one for the stoners: The pot industry is poised to be gigantic as more states embrace legalization. And, if you want to get in on the ground floor, several advocates say now is the right time to bet big on marijuana.

"Overall public opinion of marijuana has changed," said Dan Humiston, president of the International Cannabis Association. "The stance has just softened. With time as the population ages, a lot of the generations that were really opposed to it are being replaced with the generations that are comfortable with it."

Maine House rejects bill to legalize marijuana

AUGUSTA – The Maine House of Representatives has rejected a bill that seeks to legalize marijuana for recreational use in the state.

The Democratic-controlled House voted 98-45 against the bill on Monday. It will now be considered by the Republican-controlled Senate.

The bill would allow people ages 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and would set up a system to regulate and tax the drug. It would have to be approved by voters in a statewide election.

Two groups have already launched referendum drives to try to get marijuana legalization proposals on the ballot next year.

Switzerland’s youth have the second- highest cannabis consumption in the world, according to UNICEF

Since cannabis was effectively decriminalised two years ago, drug cultivation in Switzerland has soared. The country’s drug laws have swung between permissiveness and conservatism over the last two decades and the result is an ambiguous situation where possession of certain drugs – such as cannabis – is semi-decriminalised.

Regulation did not increase marijuana use in Uruguay

The regulation of the production and sale of cannabis in 2013 did not increase the use of this drug in Uruguay, according to a study by the National Drug Board (JND), under the Presidency.

The sixth national survey on drug use in households suggests that 9.3% of the population used marijuana in the last 12 months, compared to 8.3% in 2011, posted the smallest increase in 14 years.

Meanwhile, 6.3% of Uruguayans regular users of cannabis were reported.

According to the conclusions of the JND, "growth in consumption responds to the trend that began in 2001 indicating that the discussion on the regulation did not affect historical consumption patterns."

San Francisco's first pot 'baked sale'

Last weekend, thousands from the Bay Area poured into the outdoor SoMa StrEAT Food Park for the Get Baked Sale, the first food rally for marijuana-edibles enthusiasts.

Cannabis is only legal for medicinal use in California, though momentum is growing among supporters who seek to legalize its recreational use in a 2016 ballot initiative. Attendees at the fair had to present a state-authorized medical marijuana identification card at the door and pay $20 in order to enter.

Cannabis summer camp to open complete with 'cooking with marijuana lessons' and 'cannabis yoga'

A new summer camp is set to open in Colorado where punters climb cliffs, zip line, cycle and hike – but with a newly legal twist.

CannaCamp, which opens at the start of next month, encourages users to bring their own cannabis for recreational use all over the grounds.

Getty Smoke away: Revellers are actively encouraged to smoke weed on the resort

At the camp, which comes as legalisation for the drug becomes an increasingly hot topic, revellers can enjoy lessons on cooking with marijuana and get cannabis-infused massages.

Some more artistic lovers of the drug can try their hand in an art class or relax with what organisers call "cannabis yoga".
