Cannabis-infused coffee is now available in convenient single-use pods for those who want a little more buzz to their a.m. jolt.

Seattle-based Uncle Ike’s Pot Shop now sells pods of  premium Catapult coffee at a steep $10 per pod. Each pod works in standard, single-serve coffee makers and contain 10 mg of THC, marijuana’s psychoactive ingredient. The shop previously sold loose grounds infused with marijuana but the pods are “quickly becoming big sellers,” said the shop.

Federal officials say they’ve uncovered an alleged marijuana smuggling ring that involved three baggage handlers working at Oakland International Airport. Because airport workers can go behind the scenes where others can’t, investigators say the baggage handlers used their security badges to access off-limits areas and get pot from one point to another.

According to a criminal complaint, the workers were part of a group of people charged in an alleged conspiracy to ferry marijuana around the country, reports CBS San Francisco, dating back to July 2012.

Deep within a cedar forest in British Columbia, Dan Sutton is building what he hopes will be the most energy-efficient, high-technology greenhouse for growing cannabis. Spurred by the booming market for medical marijuana, he and a group of biologists and engineers have experimented for almost three years with digital sensors, lighting arrays, software programs and ventilators to design a greenhouse system with the lowest energy costs and highest crop yields.

“We said, ‘Let’s assume everything that’s ever been done in cannabis cultivation is wrong, and we have to build from the ground up,’” said Sutton, the 28-year-old managing director of Tantalus Labs in Vancouver.  “We have this broad realm of science that no one has been able to previously explore.”

The Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana a.k.a WAMM has been operating out of Santa Cruz, California for over two decades, but the collective is in danger of closing shop for patients if they don't receive the necessary funding.

Founded in 1993, WAMM is America's oldest continuously operating medical cannabis collective, according the the organization's website. They provide low-cost and free medicalmarijuana to California patients with a doctor's recommendation for chronic and terminal illnesses.

Global warming may give a minor twist to that classic hippie bumper sticker that quips "Acid rain: Too bad it's not as much fun as it sounds." Turns out a warming climate could boost the medicinal and psychoactive properties of plants including cannabis. 

But that’s not all: Climate change will also open up higher elevations to growing weed clandestinely on public lands, a practice that’s putting increased strain on fragile ecosystems.

Some say relaxed marijuana laws exacerbate the problem by bringing in more growers; others argue increased regulation and oversight will eventually lead to more responsible growing practices.

Outdoor pot will become hardier

Stoners just may find the green lining in California's record drought. Scientists believe the dry conditions and global warming is likely boosting the potency of pot crops.

When plants are stressed, which is the case during a drought, they tend to express more of their "medicinal" and psychoactive properties, say experts.

"Something we learned in the garden is that the more stress a plant gets the more medicinal and less edible it becomes," retired USDA ethno-botanist James Dukes tells The Daily Climate. Stress tends to convert proteins, carbohydrates and fats into secondary metabolites that protect the plant.
