How to Impress a Shark: Top 5 Lessons Gleaned from Kevin Harrington

Kevin Harrington, a serial entrepreneur and “Shark Tank” investor celebrity, made his first foray into the cannabis industry on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at the Marijuana Investor Summit.

Harrington joined a panel of four other investors at the summit’s CannaPitch, where four cannabis-related companies made pitches for early stage seed capital. Harrington wasn’t ready to sign on with any of the businesses—which ranged from biotech home-grow apparatuses to marijuana real estate zoning applications. But he did offer a great deal of wisdom for entrepreneurs within the cannabis space.

Nevada lawmakers take Colorado marijuana tour

DENVER — With smiles, selfies and a few nervous chuckles, a group of Nevada legislators and policymakers got a first-hand look at Colorado's fast-growing legal marijuana industry this weekend, coming face-to-face with thousands of green growing plants.

The small group is part of Nevada's efforts to understand what legalization could mean. The Silver State has permitted medical marijuana, and now there's talk voters might be asked to legalize recreational pot next year.

The group met its Colorado counterparts, and toured several marijuana stores, including the high-tech, 40,000-square-foot Medicine Man in Denver, one of the state's largest.

Entrepreneurs Enter the Green Rush with Technology

Most of the money during the Gold Rush was made from ancillary businesses, then technology is one of the most important ancillary sectors to look at in the Green Rush. The technology panelists at the Marijuana Investor Summit in Denver had plenty of experience among them, but as the panel moderator Michael Mayes pointed out, the bulk of the experience was in technology and software. The panelists had experience with many companies spanning a number of industries.

Green Dragon Marijuana Shop Could Change Hands

The City of Aspen’s local licensing authority will consider its first change of ownership application for a marijuana shop next month. Aspen Public Radio’s Carolyn Sackariason reports.

A Denver man has applied to the city clerk’s office to potentially buy the Green Dragon on the Hyman Avenue Mall. The application says the buyer, Ryan Milligan, plans to invest $7.2 million dollars in the deal. It would be financed by a loan from Andrew Levine, also of Denver.

Getting local approval for a change in ownership is just one step in an arduous process required by the state. Ron Radtke, owner of the Green Dragon, declined to comment on the deal. He also would have to get approval from the state to sell his business.

Aurora recreational pot venture going well after first six months

Six months into Aurora's venture of recreational marijuana sales, city officials say after a slow start everything is going about as well as could be expected.

In January, the city collected about $103,000 in tax revenue and another $109,000 in February. In the last three months of 2014, as a few stores opened, Aurora earned a little over $100,000 total.

By the end of 2015, the city expects to have between $1.5 million to $2 million in revenue from legal pot sales.

And those who waded through the process and claimed one of the city's 24 licenses are starting to see big dividends.

Pot Shop Warnings for Pregnant Women Rejected in Colorado

DENVER (AP) -- A Colorado proposal to require marijuana shops to post warnings for pregnant and nursing women failed Wednesday when Senate Republicans said the first-in-the-nation requirement would be unfair.

The bill to require maternal pot warning signs had the support of some Republicans and the state Health Department.

Supporters conceded that there's limited research that maternal marijuana use harms fetuses and nursing children. But they said Colorado should err on the side of warning consumers about the newly legal drug.

With state legalization, law firms create new practice groups to advise marijuana businesses

SAN FRANCISCO - Lawyers and pot dealers have long intersected in criminal court, but as marijuana goes mainstream, attorneys have been working to keep sellers and growers legit.

Marijuana divisions are popping up at law firms to advise pot shops on where they can locate, what their websites can say and how to vet new clients.

"It's definitely something that established firms are dipping a toe into, though they are being very cautious, and rightly so," said Sam Kamin, a professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law who teaches a class about representing the marijuana industry.

Patient Advocacy and Community Outreach Drive Successful Dispensaries

One of the most important components of the marijuana industry is the dispensary. Since marijuana cannot be legally shipped through the post office, and since laws in most states are at best vague about delivery services, the best way to sell legal marijuana is in a building known as a dispensary.
