Private marijuana clubs in Colorado Springs largely unregulated

Despite the city's ban on sales, you really can get recreational marijuana in Colorado Springs. You just need to join the right club.

Private cannabis clubs got their start in Colorado Springs, which banned recreational marijuana sales after Amendment 64 legalized them in 2012.

Denver doesn't have such clubs; it has recreational pot stores galore.

And Colorado Springs residents can drive a few miles to Manitou Springs and choose their favorite flavors at Emerald Fields or Maggie's Farm retail outlets.

But public consumption of marijuana isn't allowed anywhere in Colorado.

Colorado law enforcement encourages safe pot use

DENVER (AP) — Breaking from decades of "Just Say No"-type messaging about marijuana use, Colorado law enforcement officials are starting a new campaign designed to promote safe marijuana use.

The revised campaign starts this weekend, when tens of thousands are expected at public rallies and concerts in observation of the 4/20 marijuana holiday. A few things to know about the new effort, along with some backstory:

The Colorado Department of Transportation is taking its campaign to the demographic most likely to use pot and then drive, according to surveys. That's men aged 21 to 34.

Inside the marijuana farm growing Colorado's most beautiful cannabis

BASALT, Colorado — One cannabis grow in Colorado is setting the bar very high.

Puns aside, marijuana may be legal in the state of Colorado, but that doesn't mean that all plants are grown with equal care.

While visiting the state, we saw cannabis being grown inside dirt-caked retail stores, in warehouse districts tucked into industrial spaces and behind the glass of a medicinal dispensary in downtown Denver. But 30 minutes outside of Aspen, a pristine 25,000 square-foot facility set against a backdrop of blue skies and mountains is leading a push for a classier cannabis cultivation. It's pot gone posh.

No pot samples at Cannabis Cup? Fans will be the ones missing out

If the 2014 High Times Cannabis Cup felt a little too good to be true, Colorado’s Marijuana Enforcement Division (a.k.a. the MED) confirmed that with an early-April memo that warned licensed Colorado businesses exhibiting at the Cup about what exactly is and is not allowed this year.

Giving out samples? Banned. Being in an area designated for consumption? Think twice about that. Buying marijuana and personally giving it away? Absolutely prohibited.

Cannabis Cup Highlights Marijuana's Latest Products, Policy Developments

As legalization churns along, numerous issues are slowly but surely being addressed.

With 420 approaching, it's time for our annual reminder: Don't do anything that might bring shame to Denver, Colorado, or marijuana legalization in general.

This weekend's Cannabis Cup, a trade show for those in, or interested in, the bud industry, is doing its part to keep the jackassery to a minimum by disallowing and sales or giveaways of weed-related intoxicants. This should put it in stark contrast to the Great American Beer Festival, which every October floods our downtown streets with loopy, pretzel-necklaced nimrods.

Reefer radio: Southern Colorado AM station K-HIGH drops sports for pot

Listeners of KREL in Colorado Springs might have wondered if someone had spread cannabutter on their morning toast Monday when they tuned in and got marijuana programming instead of the radio station's usual sports news and talk shows.

If they turn their AM dial to 1580 again, they'll find out it wasn't a fluke.

Southern Colorado Radio - SoCo Radio for short - has launched the nation's first radio station dedicated to talk and news coverage of the legal marijuana industry, and it's attracted dispensaries as advertisers and hundreds of followers on social media.

SoCo Radio leased the former KREL-AM 1580 from Vero Beach, Fla.-based Pilgrim Communications on April 1 and began broadcasting Monday under the call letters KHIG.
