‘Jack’s Law’: Medical Marijuana In Schools Bill Signed By Colorado Governor

Schools in Colorado will be required to allow medical marijuana after Gov. John Hickenlooper signed “Jack’s Law” on Monday.

The law allows marijuana in schools for medical use with strict conditions.

Jack Splitt loves school so when his school confiscated the only medicine that treats his debilitating muscle spasms by stating “cannabis is a controlled substance,” Jack and his mom Stacey Linn took their fight to the state Capitol.

Last year, they helped pass a law that allows caregivers to administer cannabis at school to children who need it.

Rep. Jonathan Singer carried the legislation and thought the problem was solved. But schools found a loophole in the process.

Former treasurer sues Empire claiming it gave monopoly to marijuana dispensary

The former treasurer of Empire who was fired after she publicly confronted City Council members about a secret agreement with the town’s only marijuana dispensary owner to defer thousands of dollars in fees has filed a lawsuit against the city in federal court.

The whistle-blower lawsuit filed Tuesday by Dawn Ward’s attorney Ahson Wali accuses Mayor Wendy Koch and other Empire City Council members of violating Ward’s First Amendment rights by firing her for making protected comments at a council meeting.

“By voting to terminate Plaintiff, the Mayor and the Board violated plaintiff’s First Amendment rights through an official act or policy of the town,” the lawsuit says.

Koch did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Wednesday.

The Rise Of The Cannabis Connoisseur

Back in 2014, a man named Sean Azzariti made the first state-legal cannabis purchase in Colorado. Azzariti, an Iraq-war veteran, happily forked over about $60 for an eighth (4 grams) of Bubba Kush and some edibles. His huge grin was splashed atop news articles about the momentous occasion.

“I think for most cannabis consumers, the fact that they walked into a store, showed their ID and bought real legal marijuana for the first time in history was a huge deal,” said Matthew Huron, CEO of Colorado dispensary Good Chemistry. “That was two years ago, and it was like, ‘Wow, this is great.’ And since then, [consumers] are getting hungry.”

Denver Marijuana Companies Make Naming Rights Play at Mile High Stadium

Could Mile High Stadium take on a new meaning in the near future? Denver pot businesses sure hope so.

After Sports Authority filed for bankruptcy in March and was sold earlier this month, the Denver Broncos filed a motion to sever ties with the sports retailer. That means the team could be looking for a new naming rights sponsor for the stadium and Colorado marijuana companies want in.

At least two Denver pot-related businesses — Native Roots and O.penVAPE — have offered to pay $6 million per year to obtain the naming rights, according to the Denver Business Journal

Medical Marijuana Testing Rule Possible Boon for S.W. Colorado Labs

A requirement for medical marijuana dispensaries and growers to have their products tested could be a boon for Durango testing facilities – if a local license is in place in time.

The state’s mandatory testing rule takes effect July 1, and Aurum Labs and Green Lab Solutions are asking city officials to create a license for the testing, owners said. The labs test for marijuana potency, mold and bacteria.

Their request is reasonable, said Councillor Dick White, who was approached by Aurum Labs representatives about creating a city license.

But city officials want to work on several changes to local marijuana regulations, including the new license, and pass them at the same time. White could not say how long that might take.

Watch: Drug tests present major hurdle for employers

Read the full transcript below:

HARI SREENIVASAN, PBS ANCHOR: So Jackie Calmes, how big is this problem of people walking away from a job interview when they hear that there’s a drug test?

JACKIE CALMES: Well, it’s bigger than I thought! Clearly, because this whole subject came to me in a completely separate news story I was reporting. And employers, local leaders, just volunteered to me that as the unemployment rate came down, the biggest hurdle they were facing in finding – in filling jobs was finding people who were willing to take a drug test, and if they did take a drug test, could pass it. And I thought, well, that can’t be as big a problem as they’re making it out to be.

Cooking with Cannabis: Philip Wolf Helps to Plan Your Next Meal

With the surge in cannabis consumption at a recreational level becoming increasingly more legal, it’s only fitting to explore cannabis and food pairings on a deeper level. Through some thoughtful research online I noticed that not many people were really having this conversation in a public forum.

Sure, there were some menus where some restaurants had taken it upon themselves to pair strains with featured menu items. But I wondered, how did they make those decisions? What made them the voice of authority? Was there a bad ass formula that I was missing out on? I needed to know how to elevate my cerebral foodie experience.
