Bud+Breakfast: the marijuana inn where wake and bake is a serious business

Joel and Lisa Schneider’s bed and breakfast in Silverthorne, Colorado, has all the trappings of a traditional B&B (stone fireplace, home-cooked meals, an alarmingly cute dog), with one significant addition: a complimentary bar of seven marijuana strains, and more than a dozen different implements to smoke them out of.

Medical Marijuana Testing on the Way to Becoming Law in Colorado

Starting this summer, medical marijuana products will be required to undergo testing by certified facilities, much the way that recreational products are currently tested. Last week the Colorado House passed House Bill 16-1064, which will enable facilities to get a medical marijuana testing license in anticipation of that testing, and the state Senate passed the proposal on March 8.

Growing Colorado Cannabis Is Energy Hungry Work, But Innovation Could Change That

Inside a nondescript warehouse south of I-70 in Denver, Nick Hice opens a door into a large room holding a few hundred cannabis plants. One of the first things you notice about the room: It's bright. Glaring yellow high-pressure sodium light fixtures are strung from the ceiling. The whole place has a feverish glow. Even though it's indoors, Hice and his workers here at Denver Relief typically wear sunglasses when working here.

It's those lights that are the key to growing commercial marijuana successfully.

Marijuana Outsold Alcohol in Aspen During Two Months in 2015

There are only seven marijuana dispensaries in Aspen.

But they are presumably as busy as liquor stores in the community — and sometimes more so.

According to newly released City of Aspen statistics, alcohol sales exceeded marijuana sales in the community in 2015.

But during two months of the year — March and April — cannabis was king.

The numbers were shared by the Aspen Times, which points out that separate marijuana and alcohol sales stats for 2015 represent a first for the community.

Researchers Study Marijuana Use in Pregnant Mothers

Researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus are studying the detection of prenatal marijuana use in a legalized environment. The study of marijuana use in pregnancy is only possible in a few states.

Although physicians tell women they should not use marijuana in pregnancy, it is difficult to provide them with data to support the recommendation. The need for data-supported information grows as  change nationwide.

The Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute recently awarded a Child and Maternal Health Pilot Grant to Assistant Professor Torri Metz, MD, to develop a questionnaire for new mothers about marijuana use during their pregnancy.

Pivotal Supreme Court Decision on Marijuana Legalization Delayed Again

The Supreme Court of the United States has again delayed any decision regarding the future of legal marijuana in the United States.

According to the Denver Post’s John Ingold this morning, the SCOTUS has yet to decide whether to hear or reject a lawsuit brought by two of Colorado’s neighboring states, Nebraska and Oklahoma

The SCOTUS first delayed deliberations on the lawsuit for a memorial for Justice Scalia. The lawsuit again appeared on the SCOTUS calendar for Friday, but as of today, no decision had been made.

High Times with Aspen's Cannabis Kingpin

Silverpeak Apothecary is the only cannabis shop in Aspen, and probably all of Colorado—perhaps the world—where a 74-year-old, four-foot-eleven, bespectacled Jewish grandmother greets you at the door. “I’ll show you around,” Ellen Haas cooed last September as I entered the shop on East Cooper Avenue, hidden below street level, near a Rolex retailer, a Ralph Lauren boutique, and a Lululemon store. A retired fashion designer, Haas first ventured into Silverpeak to seek relief for her rheumatoid arthritis. “I educate people now,” she told me, clutching my arm with surprising strength.

The marijuana business might have a high-stakes pest problem

Moving the black market in marijuana into the light has been a boon for state tax coffers, entrepreneurs and cannabis users, but an inconvenient fact went unaddressed in the process: Potentially dangerous chemicals are used to grow it.

That changed last fall, when a Colorado newspaper’s investigation found shelves stocked with products grown using pesticides that hadn’t been approved for cannabis farming, spurring a rush of legal, regulatory and business activity.

Since then, states have quickly drawn up regulations, companies have seen their products and methods put under the microscope — sometimes taking big hits to their businesses — and cannabis product and pesticide buyers have filed lawsuits against their manufacturers.

The Highs And Lows Of Selling Retail Marijuana In Colorado

It’s 3 p.m. on a weekday afternoon and I have wedged my mom-SUV into a parking space in a narrow lot along busy Hampden Ave in Denver. There is a sign at the parking lot entrance with the face of a green man, with flowing green hair and beard. It reads, not surprisingly, Green Man Cannabis.

The store, squeezed into the back of the lot, has no sign, but its exterior has a modern, updated design with color-blocked panels in shades of green. It looks almost like it might’ve just last week served as a computer repair shop, or a fitness equipment dealer. But no, it was designed and built from the ground up to be one thing only: a retail marijuana shop.
