Recreational Marijuana Policy Is A 'Unique' Challenge: How Tax Revenue And Public Opinion Influence Policymakers

Recreational marijuana policy is great for studying how effective policy adoption and implementation works, mainly due to its unique nature. Colorado cities, municipalities, and counties can currently choose how to adopt marijuana legalization policies, and whether or not they want to at all. By using this state as a case study, one researcher has found that public opinion, tax revenues, and existing medical marijuana policies have the biggest impact on local governments’ decisions to allow the sale of recreational marijuana. The study was published in State and Local Government Review, a SAGE journal.

New Colorado Tourism Director Wants to Open Discussion About Cannabis

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has named Cathy Ritter, former director of the Illinois Bureau of Tourism, as the new director of the Colorado Tourism Office.

In a move away from the policies of the previous Colorado tourism officials, Ritter says she wants to open a discussion on the role of marijuana in the state’s tourism. Previously, tourism officials have made a point to avoid crediting cannabis for the recent surge in visitors to Colorado. Ritter, in contrast, wants to research what part marijuana plays in the state’s tourism:

AMA: Marijuana use during pregnancy could pose risks, warnings needed

CHICAGO – Warning: Marijuana use during pregnancy and breast-feeding poses potential harms.

That message would be written on medical and recreational marijuana products and posted wherever they’re sold if the nation’s most influential doctors group has its way.

The American Medical Association agreed Monday to push for regulations requiring such warnings be written on medical and recreational pot products and posted wherever they’re sold. The decision was made based on studies suggesting marijuana use may be linked with low birth weight, premature birth and behaviour problems in young children.

Critics say evidence of harm is weak, but while advocates agree that more research is needed, they say erring on the side of caution makes sense.

Flowhub: Nipping Inventory Management Problems In The Bud

Big Ideas

In 2014, Kyle Sherman made a significant career decision: to delve into the world of cannabis. Leaving behind a successful advertising career in Los Angeles, the long-time entrepreneur relocated his family to Denver, Colorado, the spot to eat, sleep, and breathe the real-time culture of the industry he was passionate to learn more about.

During his time at a commercial grow-op, Sherman realized the technology used to manage cannabis grow-ops and dispensaries was lagging behind. Compliance issues in daily operations were costing time, energy, and dollars, which he found stifling.

After strong initial interest, city says marijuana business license inquiries have tapered off

Steamboat Springs — City officials say the long line of people wanting to get into the marijuana business in Steamboat Springs hasn't been making as much noise in recent months.

"They were really trying to beat down the doors for a long time, but that has tapered off," Assistant City Attorney Dan Foote said Friday.

Prior to August, Foote said, the city was hearing from as many as two new individuals each month who wanted to get in on the local marijuana industry.

U.S. Officials Warn Against Cannabis and Bitcoin Investment

Colorado Securities Commissioner (CSC) Gerald Rome had some things to say concerning investments in digital currency and cannabis. It seems the state employee where reefer is legalized doesn’t see the incredible amounts of capital injection happening all around the world from these businesses. In fact, it’s interesting he and other U.S. officials have not seen the level of wealth being poured into the state provided by cannabis companies.

Colorado: Gov. Hickenlooper orders pesticide-tainted marijuana destroyed

DENVER — Colorado's governor ordered the destruction Thursday of marijuana treated with unapproved pesticides, his first action on the matter after months of product recalls and media warnings about unhealthy pesticides on pot.

The executive order by Gov. John Hickenlooper called marijuana treated with certain pesticides a "threat to public safety" and said it should be destroyed.

The governor acknowledged that there's scant scientific evidence about which pesticides and fungicides are safe to use on marijuana, but he said that questionable pot should be destroyed until more is known.
