Teams from nine companies presented in private sessions to groups of local investors, a warm-up of sorts to the public event Wednesday evening. About 30 investors were in attendance, full of advice for the green businesses.

“Don’t pitch me a product; pitch me the market,” said Don Grede, chief capital officer for California-based Aquarius Cannabis, a marijuana branding company. “You should be able to tell me why I should invest without even identifying the product.”

The marijuana business is booming in Colorado, with pot sales topping $100 million for the first time in August.

But should investors put their money into the cannabis industry?

The State of Colorado doesn't quite say "no," but it comes close.

Colorado's Division of Securities has issued an "investor alert" that warns folks against pouring their cash into the "next big thing." And the document includes marijuana alongside binary options and digital currency such as bitcoin as business opportunities that may turn into money losers, not big winners.

State health inspectors entered New Jersey’s largest marijuana dispensary in August. Tucked away inside a cabinet, they found a sealed container of pesticide.

Unused as it was, the container landed the dispensary in trouble, and highlighted an issue that is creating legal and regulatory waves across the industry, including a first-of-its-kind class action lawsuit in Colorado over the use of chemical substances to improve the quality and yield of the cannabis plant.

Changes might be coming for Colorado cannabis physicians and the patients they serve – but at least those docs and their clients will have had a say.
