Colorado yields to marijuana industry pressure on pesticides

A lack of guidance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency frustrated Colorado's efforts to decide how to handle pesticides and pot.

State regulators have known since 2012 that marijuana was grown with potentially dangerous pesticides, but pressure from the industry and lack of guidance from federal authorities delayed their efforts to enact regulations, and they ultimately landed on a less restrictive approach than originally envisioned.

Three years of e-mails and records obtained by The Denver Post and dozens of interviews show state regulators struggled with the issue while the cannabis industry protested that proposed limits on pesticides would leave their valuable crops vulnerable to devastating disease.

Historic Day – First Sales of Recreational Marijuana in Manzanita

Oregon, Colorado, Washington, Alaska, and the District of Columbia have voted to legalize marijuana, but the October. 1 start date means the state has become the third state where marijuana is offered for recreational sale.

At present, only “dispensaries”-outlets which had formerly been exclusively committed to distribution of marijuana for medical uses-are permitted to sell marijuana, pending the release of a system for regulating outlets exclusively devoted to distributing marijuana for purely recreational use”.

In Madras, all three dispensaries plan on selling recreational marijuana, but city law stipulates they open no earlier than 8 a.m. Prineville, where one dispensary is located, and La Pine, with two, does not allow recreational marijuana sales.

Colorado Springs marijuana club shut down on opening night

A marijuana social club that opened Friday amid questions over the legality of such venues - and a citywide moratorium on new ones - has been shut down for reasons completely unrelated to the controversy.

Fire investigators went to One Love Club, on 21st Street between Highway 24 and Colorado Avenue in Colorado Springs, before it opened to tell the owner the club needed permits it didn't have in order to open, Fire Marshal Brett Lacey said Saturday. But the club opened anyway, and at 10 p.m. Friday the Colorado Springs Fire Department shut it down and kicked everyone out.

Saturday afternoon, the club posted a "thank you" message on its Facebook page.

Tribes: Let's Learn About Medicinal Cannabis

Tribes are posed with a dilemma - whether the cannabis plant offers Tribes and their members a chance to enter into the Universe of Healing through the Great Spirit’s plants or whether we will keep our “mind set” closed to growing this medicine plant. I strongly urge Tribes and Tribal Peoples to learn about the healing properties of the cannabis plant and not just condemn it.

New club in Colorado Springs tests rules on marijuana social clubs

The One Love Club parking lot filled quickly after its doors opened Friday night. The new west-side pot social club is clear, on signs around the joint, that it does not sell marijuana.

It's a reimbursement system.

If that doesn't make sense to you, you're not alone. The Colorado Springs City Council imposed a six-month moratorium Sept. 22 on opening new cannabis clubs, which have long been unregulated in Colorado Springs. In many cases, people are given "free" pot in exchange for membership fees.

Colorado Springs moratorium on medical marijuana shops would hurt 'thousands'

Medical marijuana centers in Colorado Springs, being eyed by the City Council for a six-month moratorium, brought in $2 million in city sales tax and license fees last year.

Sales tax revenue skyrocketed from $110,765 in 2009 to $1.49 million last year. And money from license fees is at $528,750 this year, compared with $226,000 in all of 2010. The city also picked up nearly $7,000 over the past five years from marijuana business personal property taxes collected by El Paso County.

But that's all small potatoes compared with the millions spent on leases, super-secure construction, extensive renovations, video cameras and 40-day backup video, motion detectors, employee salaries and benefits, armed guards and "product," i.e. medical marijuana.

An idyllic homestead dinner, which began as “the longtime dream” of Ashley Rheingold, managing member of Headquarters Cannabis Co., became a romantic sunset reality when she hosted the recent Headquarters Harvest Dinner, a four-course, farm-to-table dinner with cannabis pairings at Shupe Homestead in Longmont, northwest of Denver.  Each food course was paired with both a cannabis strain and wine or cocktail to create a heightened epicurean experience outside on a beautiful warm rural evening.
