The growth in cannabis retail stores between 2018 and 2020 was driven by more than just the move to legalize recreational weed three years ago, suggests a new Canadian study.

“From 2018 to 2020, Canada’s rapid cannabis retail expansion was strongly related to legal sales growth, but only weakly related to prevalence growth,” reports Michael Armstrong, an associate professor of operations research in Brock University’s Goodman School of Business.

Police in Durham Region say they have seized millions of dollars worth of drugs following a five-month investigation into fentanyl traffickers in the area. In a news release issued Monday, Durham Regional Police said the investigation, dubbed Project Econoline, was spearheaded by the service’s drug enforcement unit and saw the execution of 28 search warrants within the Greater Toronto Area.

Over the course of the investigation, police said they recovered 5.8 kilograms of fentanyl, 4.2 kilograms of cocaine, 205 grams of methamphetamine, 3,000 oxycodone pills, and 30 kilograms of illicit cannabis.

Niagara College's Commercial Cannabis Production program now has a licence from Health Canada to cultivate industrial hemp.

Students will be studying plant genetics, seeding and germination, flower identification, harvesting, and drying hemp.

Dean of Business, Tourism and Environment Alan Unwin says,  "The uses and the industries for the hemp plant and the cannabis plant are quite different so this will help them when they graduate. It's staying on top of things that we're seeing in the industry."

Production is already underway after students grew a small field in the college's hop yard over the summer.
