Sandra Bland was high on marijuana — while she was incarcerated in the Texas jail where she eventually died — according to Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis. Mathis reportedly said in a text message to an attorney representing the Bland family that “[l]ooking at the autopsy results and toxicology, it appears she swallowed a large quantity of marijuana or smoked it in the jail.”

If true, this allegation suggests that security in this jail facility is extraordinarily lax. How does marijuana make its way to an incarcerated individual in the first place? And how does that individual manage to smoke or eat a “large quantity” of it without jail officials noticing?

ERATH COUNTY — Roughly 10,000 marijuana plants were seized in southern Erath County Friday in what state troopers are calling one of the largest drug busts in recent memory.

Police said the estimated value of the marijuana is in excess of $60 million.

The entire grow operation took place outdoors over several pieces of land south of Stephenville, police said. A photo from the Erath County Sheriff's Office shows some of the plants indoors at an undisclosed evidence storage unit.

On Friday, July 17 agents with the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division, Texas Highway Patrol, Drug Enforcement Administration, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Texas Army National Guard, Investigators with the Mineral Wells Police Department, and the Palo Pinto and Erath County Sheriff’s Office seized approximately 10,000 marijuana plants being cultivated on the South end of Erath County.

The seizure was a result of the Domestic Marijuana Eradication program and shows the great working relations and corporation that law enforcement in this area possess.

A research published in the journal Nature Neuroscience has tested the levels of pain sensitivity among male and female. To know the same, study researchers used male and female mice and came to know both genders experience the same levels of pain sensitivity. But they were activated through different immune cells during response.

The researchers wanted to know the gender differences in pain response, so that new therapies could be more successful when they enter the market. In the experiment, the male and female mice were injured on foot and were then given medicine.

AUSTIN - The only sure bet at legalizing marijuana appears to be a ballot initiative. It's the only way that sales and possession have won approval in other states.

But it's unlikely to happen anytime soon in Texas, where citizens don’t have the kind of access to referendums that advocates for relaxed drug laws have used in places such as Oregon and Colorado.

That leaves pro-marijuana advocates here vowing a return to the Legislature to again lobby for decriminalization - if not full legalization.

“For some reason, state lawmakers have always been behind the curve of public opinion when it comes to marijuana policy reform,”  said Morgan Fox, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project.

AUSTIN — Texas lawmakers may be reluctant to ease up on punishing small-time pot smokers, but local prosecutors across the state are increasingly looking for ways to keep two-bit toking cases from clogging court dockets and wasting resources.

This past session, seven bills that would have reduced criminal penalties for minor marijuana possession went up in smoke. But some county prosecutors are already choosing to pass on even filing charges when it comes to small pot possession cases, or looking for ways to divert recreational users to probation or community service programs.

Some have been doing so for years.
