Why Blame Marijuana For Sandra Bland's Death?

Sandra Bland died on July 13 in a Waller County, Texas, jail cell, apparently by her own hand. Police say the 28-year-old woman, who had just traveled from Illinois to Texas for a job at Prairie View A&M University, used a trash can liner to hang herself. But the dashcam video of the routine traffic stop that led to her arrest three days earlier indicates that Bland would not have ended up in jail if she had complied with Trooper Brian Encinia’s request that she put out her cigarette. After she declined, Encinia ordered her out of her car, and the encounter quickly escalated. Waller County officials have suggested that something else Bland smoked may have contributed to her arrest or her death.

Experts Say Sandra Bland’s Toxicology Report Raises Questions

An initial toxicology report for Sandra Bland, the woman who died in jail in Waller County, Tex., on July 13, showed that she had marijuana in her system after her death, but the document does not offer an accurate reading of just how much was circulating in her blood when she died.

When a death is suspicious, sudden or unexpected, toxicology reports are not uncommon.

U.S.: Neuroscientist Says THC Level In Sandra Bland's System Was Negligible

The amount of THC in Sandra Bland's system was negligible, and equal to placebo, according to neuroscientist Dr. Carl Hart, who has spent nearly 20 years researching the neurophysiological, psychological and behavioral effects of marijuana.

"Of course, the scientific evidence almost never supports these fantastic distractions," Dr. Hart said. "Yet, the 'drug-crazed black person' myth continues to be revitalized decade after decade by racists masquerading as public servants."

"I find this line of reasoning insulting and offensive," Dr. Hart said. "It seeks to misuse the science of behavioral pharmacology to excuse reprehensible acts perpetrated by the state or state proxies."

Toxicology Report Released for Sandra Bland

Those who attended Sandra Bland’s funeral make it clear that they are not going to quietly go away.

“When it’s all complete, the FBI, Texas Rangers, and everybody turns their complete investigation out, you’ll see that factual wise, all the conspiracy theories just don’t work out”, said Waller County Sheriff R. Glenn Smith.

Mathis said he could understand how some people “looking at some of the bad things in our past would jump to the conclusion that this was a murder and not a suicide”.

“These men have no honour and we can not abide by their word”.

Police: Man posed as fisherman to guard $1 million of marijuana hidden on South Padre Island ...

A man allegedly posed as a fisherman July 11 in order to watch over more than 1,600 pounds of marijuana hiding along a beach on South Padre Island, according to Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio.

Sheriff officials and the Coast Guard worked together to arrest Mario Antonio San Carmento-Gomez, 39, of Veracruz, Mexico, who now faces federal charges for possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, according to online court records.

Lucio told the The Brownsville Herald that the agency got an anonymous tip, prompting them to search a sandy beach about 14 miles north of beach access No. 6 on the island, north of Port Isabel.

Escape Should Lead to Drug Law Reform, Advocates Say

Corruption. Extradition. Border violence. Those were the standard talking-point topics by Texas lawmakers following Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán's brazen escape last week from a maximum-security Mexican prison.

Now, some advocates hope to add “drug policy reform” to the list, arguing that Guzmán’s catapult back to power of the Sinaloa cartel should lead to new discussions on how much outlawing drugs empowers the world's most ruthless drug lords.

Sandra Bland Becomes The Latest Victim Of The ‘Marijuana Smear’

Sandra Bland was high on marijuana — while she was incarcerated in the Texas jail where she eventually died — according to Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis. Mathis reportedly said in a text message to an attorney representing the Bland family that “[l]ooking at the autopsy results and toxicology, it appears she swallowed a large quantity of marijuana or smoked it in the jail.”

If true, this allegation suggests that security in this jail facility is extraordinarily lax. How does marijuana make its way to an incarcerated individual in the first place? And how does that individual manage to smoke or eat a “large quantity” of it without jail officials noticing?

Why is marijuana used against victims like Sandra Bland? - Philly.com

News outlets today are reporting that Black Lives Matter activist Sandra Bland had marijuana in her system when she died while being held in a Prairie View, Texas jail three days after a traffic stop.

Reuters reports that Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis texted the attorney for Bland's family saying, "Looking at the autopsy results and toxicology, it appears she swallowed a large quantity of marijuana or smoked it in the jail."

Bland's actual levels were not disclosed. Her family's attorney, Cannon Lambert, has called the autopsy "defective."
