Will State Lawmakers Fix Texas' Harsh Marijuana Laws Next Session?

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s decision last week to list cannabis alongside the world’s deadliest drugs, like heroin, means that states will continue to decide on their own whether pot possession should be harshly punished and what, if any, patients are allowed access to a plant with many known medical uses.

Small Town North of Dallas Could Become Hub of Medical Cannabis Industry

A cotton gin that sat empty for decades in this small North Texas town could be filled next year with the first cannabis plants legally grown in the state.

The man investing in the old buildings plans to open a greenhouse and processing facility to make cannabis oil as a medical treatment for people with severe epilepsy. A Texas statute enacted in 2015 paves the way for the cultivation of non-psychoactive cannabis for that purpose. It was  the only marijuana-related bill approved in the last legislative session.

Lawmakers: Decriminalizing Marijuana Could Be Good for Texas Business

Texans who are arrested for possessing small amounts of marijuana shouldn’t be locked out of jobs and haunted by minor lapses in judgment for the rest of their lives, business and legislative leaders say.

As acceptance of marijuana — medical and otherwise — grows nationally and in Texas, members of both major political parties in the Legislature have staked out positions supporting the decriminalization of possession of small amounts of marijuana. The proposed change could be beneficial for Texas businesses, proponents have said.

Some Texas legislators ready for more medical marijuana use

Some Texas legislators would like to see more allowable uses for medical marijuana by expanding a law approved in 2015.

The law lets patients with a rare form of epilepsy be legally treated with cannabidiol, or CBD, the Austin American-Statesman reported (http://atxne.ws/1UVXxm7 ).

The Texas Department of Public Safety has not yet completed the process to permit CBD businesses to get up and running. The first permits are scheduled to be granted in June 2017, the newspaper reported.

Sen. José Menéndez, of San Antonio, failed to get a broad medical marijuana bill approved in 2015. He said he’d support any expansion of the current law for therapeutic uses.

Is Texas the next hotbed for growing pot for CBD?

Businesses gear up for the Texas marijuana ‘green rush’ which is slated to boom in 2017.

About 60 miles north of Dallas, amid green fields in the sleepy town of Gunter — population 1,486 — Texas Cannabis CEO Patrick Moran has optioned to buy a former cotton gin, where he plans to grow the Cannabis sativa plant, known more commonly as marijuana.

The businessman and attorney is positioning himself at the forefront of what he estimates will be a $900 million a year industry in Texas — the recently legalized market for treating intractable epilepsy with a strain of marijuana that eases seizures without getting patients high.

Weed.
