The Global Marijuana March returns to North Texas this Saturday in Hyde Park in downtown Ft. Worth and libertarians will be in the thick of it once again as usual. Last year an estimated 2,000 cannabis freedom supporters flooded the streets and organizers hope to top that with 3,000 participants this year.

Last year was a historic year for the Alamo City chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML.

The group of activists who want to see Texas' pot laws reformed held its first rally and march.

And on May 7, at 2 p.m., it will continue to support Lone Star State pot reforms with its second annual march and rally.

Destiny Young, SA NORML's new executive director (she replaces DWI and 420 Dude Jamie Balagia), said supporters should meet at Brackenridge Park at 2 p.m. at the softball fields.

With medical marijuana now legal in 23 states — and recreational weed legal in four — the conversation about pot will only continue to buzz. Soon, weed as research, as medicine, and as business may no longer be a taboo topic.

But what parts of the country talk the most about marijuana? Denver may be the first to come to mind, since it was the first to legalize recreational use, but a new report from Aizman Law Firm finds this isn’t always the case. The law firm decided to see what U.S. cities mentioned weed on social media the most, so it analyzed geotagged Instagram posts hashtagged with the phrases #weed, #maryjane, #marijuana, or #420.

David Lee Buffington’s obituary was brief, only three sentences, but his father said he included one detail to make a point.

David Lee Buffington, 50, died March 4 in Clute while smoking synthetic cannabis, the obituary states.

“The reason I put it in the paper like that is I wanted to make a statement and maybe someone will read it and think a little bit about it,” Wade Buffington said.

Wade Buffington said he was told by Clute police officers they suspected his son overdosed on synthetic marijuana, but nothing has been verified.

Interim Clute Police Chief Ernest Pedraza said he cannot confirm David Lee Buffington’s cause of death until they receive the autopsy report.

A former Orange County political activist who helped draft recent marijuana legalization initiatives was arrested in Texas last week on suspicion of transporting more than $1 million worth of cannabis.

Samuel Hershel Clauder II, 64, was driving a Chrysler minivan outside Wichita Falls on Feb. 22 when a Texas trooper stopped him for a traffic violation, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A police dog signaled it smelled narcotics in the vehicle, the release said. In the back seat, authorities said, the trooper discovered duffel bags containing 174 pounds of marijuana.

In a telephone interview with the Register on Monday, Clauder said that “all of the numbers are extremely exaggerated.”

More than 6,000 people are expected at the Southwest Cannabis Conference and Expo this weekend when it takes over the downtown convention center.

Presenters include Montel Williams, former NFL stars, doctors, advocates, and veterans like Roger Martin.

"It's obviously a cutting edge thing, especially in Texas," said the US Army veteran, who a few years ago started the Colorado-based group Grow for Vets.

He says he plans to expand the non-profit's marijuana outreach efforts for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder to Texas because so many military vets call the Lone Star state home.

But for graphic designer Nathan Sharp, the assignment went beyond picking good paper, ribbons, and fonts. Tasked with designing the packaging for Kiva Confections, a line of cannabis-infused gourmet chocolates, the Texas-bred designer had to find a tasteful solution for displaying product information and medicinal warnings on the front of the candy bar.
