Texas closely watching Colorado's 'grand experiment' with commercialized marijuana

Marijuana legalization opponents in Colorado say Texas shouldn't legalize marijuana, citing, among others, marijuana-related traffic deaths. Meanwhile, marijuana advocates say legalized pot increases job and provides more taxes to the state.(Photo: KHOU)

The marijuana industry in Colorado now employs an estimated 16,000 workers, generates $1 billion in annual sales and in 2014 generated approximately $76 million in taxes funneled into the state’s general fund.

But marijuana legalization opponents like Bob Doyle, the co-chair of Better Way Colorado (formerly known as Project SAM – Smart Approaches to Colorado), offered this advice for other states like Texas.

Texas Veterans Rally at State Capitol for Medical Marijuana Reform

Veterans from the Air Force, Army and Navy used the day that honors their service to rally in Austin, urging state officials to take a step toward creating a medical marijuana program that will allow treatment with cannabis for "service-related conditions," like PTSD.

Calling the action 'Operation Trapped,' which is backed by the Texans for Responsible Marijuana Policy coalition, is the kick-off for a year-long awareness campaign about veterans who want to ditch the prescription pills in favor of medical marijuana.

Advocates say cannabis can be used to treat "post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), chronic pain, and other service-related conditions."

Uprooting the cannabis industry’s lighting technology

LED lamps, while still controversial, are being touted by some cannabis entrepreneurs as a low-energy, environmentally-friendly way to control the industry’s costs.

As the legal marijuana industry gains momentum and flourishes, more growers are scrambling to find the most cost-efficient ways to produce their cannabis for a rapidly-expanding market.

Poll: 74% Support For Marijuana Decriminalization In Texas

I always say that Texas is a tough place for marijuana reform. Unlike most other states that have voted to reform their marijuana laws, Texas does not have a citizens initiative process. In states like Oregon, where I live, citizens can gather a certain number of signatures, and put marijuana reform on the ballot. Texas does not provide its citizens that option.
