Here's why you need a workplace marijuana policy

If you’re a small-business owner and marijuana has been legalized in your state, should you care?

The short answer is, yes. Nearly half of small businesses don't have a policy about cannabis use in the workplace and 10% have had employees show up under the influence of a controlled substance at work, according to a survey released Wednesday by Employers Holdings EIG, +1.87%  , a workers’ compensation carrier.

The study polled 501 businesses nationwide that employed fewer than 100 employees, in states with varying legalization laws.

Twenty-three states have legalized medical marijuana and four states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational cannabis.

Marijuana dispensary in Marion ready to serve patients

MARION — The first medical marijuana dispensary registered in Illinois hosted a ribbon cutting Tuesday to signify it is ready for business.

One problem: There is no product to sell.

Harbory dispensary Co-Owner Michele Koo said the dispensary is expecting to receive product in November.

The fact there isn’t product didn’t stop a dual celebration from the Marion and Carbondale Chambers of Commerce announcing the dispensary’s opening.

Ashley Gott, Marion Chamber of Commerce chairman, said the chamber welcomes all businesses. He said this particular one could help several people.

Legalise cannabis debate: Only 14 out of 650 MPs take part in parliamentary discussion on drug

Just 14 out of a possible 650 MPs attended a parliamentary debate on whether Britain should legalise the production, sale and use of cannabis, despite it being triggered by a petition that attracted nearly a quarter of a million signatures.

The debate in Westminster Hall was scheduled after a petition arguing legalising cannabis couldbring in £900m ($1.3bn) in taxes every year to the UK, save £400m on policing, and create over 10,000 new jobs was signed by 220,000 people, making it the third most popular parliamentary petition ever.

Car made of hemp makes Denver stop

The car drew remarkably little attention in a city of legalized marijuana.

No crowd surrounded it. Passersby didn’t pause to look it over. Probably that’s because it looks just like a Mazda Miata convertible — except for the side panel poster of George Washington smoking a joint.

Indeed, the chassis of this unique automobile prototype was taken from a Miata. But the body is pure hemp, whose fibers have been woven, put in a mold, hardened with resin and covered with paint.

Its promoters call the bright red result the greenest car in the world.

The body is an agricultural product. The engine can run on biobutanol, a fuel made of agricultural scraps that smells like a blend of garbage, wood chips and alcohol.

It came after an online petition drew 220,000 signatures, making it the third most popular petition on Parliament's website.

The debate was led by Labour MP Paul Flynn, who explained why he thinks criminalisation of the drug has failed in an exclusive article for the Mirror.

And there were spirited speeches from Green MP Caroline Lucas and Lib Dem health spokesman Norman Lamb.

Here's a recap of how the debate unfolded.

The Doctor Synonymous with THC Research Forges Onward

Zach Klein, the documentarian behind the film “The Scientist,” is a multifaceted individual. Klein was working in Israeli TV, specifically Israeli Sesame Street, while also pursuing a degree in environmental studies when his mother received a dire diagnosis. It was this diagnosis that lead him to examine medical cannabis, eventually establishing both a friendship and working relationship with the Israeli biochemist who, among other achievements, discovered THC in 1964.

'robust' rules created for medical marijuana

• The California Electronic Communications Privacy Act, which will require police to get a court order before they can search messages, photos and other digital data stored on phones or company servers in the nation's most-populous state. Civil-liberties advocates called the new law that takes effect Jan. 1 an important advance and said it highlights the need for similar protections at the national level.

• A measure that compels crisis pregnancy centers that discourage women from getting abortions in California to provide information about abortions and other services. The measure imposes the first such statewide rule, after local communities around the country have tried similar efforts.

Wine & Weed: Pot tourism goes upscale in the Colorado Rockies

If achieving a glistening, golden-hour slideshow on Vanity Fair’s website alongside Hollywood happenings and New York Fashion Week news last month is any indication — farm-to-table dinners paired with spirits and cannabis are officially a thing, breaking new ground toward cultural acceptance.
