Michigan marijuana legalization drive poised to clear step

LANSING, MI (AP) – Organizers of a marijuana legalization drive in Michigan are poised to clear a procedural step.

The Michigan Cannabis Coalition is expected to receive word from state election officials Tuesday on whether the form of its petition is OK.

The initiated legislation would require 252,000 valid voter signatures before going to the Republican-led Legislature. If lawmakers rejected the bill or took no action, it would receive a statewide vote in November 2016.

The initiative is being supported by anonymous people from the agricultural, real estate, insurance and education sectors. The group says Michigan could add jobs and tax revenue by legalizing and regulating marijuana for recreational purposes.

Here's what might happen to marijuana prices if it were legalized across the US

Over the last two decades marijuana has practically been an unstoppable force.

Since 1995, 23 states have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes, while four states (along with Washington D.C.) have legalized all aspects of marijuana, including its recreational use for adults. Even in states where marijuana failed to gain approval initially, such as Oregon, the proverbial scales were tipped in favor of supporters just a few short years later.

Australian review jeopardises Norfolk Island medicinal cannabis export deal

A landmark deal to grow a high-strain medicinal cannabis on Norfolk Island for export to Canada is in jeopardy, with the Australian government reviewing the decision.

Last week, Perth-based AusCann Group Holdings was granted a licence by the Norfolk Island government, a self-governing external Australian territory, to grow a high-grade medicinal strain of cannabis. AusCann intends to export its first crop to Canada by July next year.

However, the granting of the licence came after the Australian government passed legislation to abolish Norfolk’s Island parliament and replace it with a local council, which means the island government is effectively in caretaker mode while its laws are brought in line with Australian ones.

Marijuana legalization: good or bad for Ohio businesses?

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The marijuana legalization debate is most often expressed as a social or moral issue.

But the forum, "Marijuana Legalization: Will Your Business Be Impaired?" at the Greater Cleveland Partnership forum Thursday framed the debate as a workplace and workforce issue. The organization hasn't taken a position on legalization, but held the event to expose the local business community to all sides of the issues, said Joseph Roman, the GCP's president and chief executive officer.

“Our goal is to go after the biggest and baddest drug traffickers, so we actually target the people who are calling the shots,” he told ABC15. The people who are calling the shots, he said, are often the major drug cartels in Mexico.

“Methamphetamine, heroine and marijuana,” he said, “the Mexican cartels control all those; they manufacturer all those.”

Dan Humiston: Creating the International Cannabis Association

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Dan Humiston, founder and president of the International Cannabis Association, who represents a large demographic of hopeful entrants to the cannabis industry. While there are plenty of people across the U.S. who are looking to transition from a black market cannabis career to owning a regulated business in the legal industry, there is also much interest from people who see cannabis purely as a business opportunity and who may have never grown–or even consumed–it themselves.

In this interview, Dan talks about how he made the choice to transition from his successful career as a business owner to founding a cannabis business association, and what he predicts the future holds for the legalization movement.
