Marijuana legalization puts extra onus on police K-9s' human partners

For years, dogs in police K-9 units have been used to detect several illegal drugs, including marijuana, but with pot’s legalization in Washington, there has been a complication.

Since the dog may be detecting a legal amount of marijuana – and can’t communicate that it is detecting another drug or a humongous amount of pot – police and sheriff’s deputies now have to document additional reasons why they believe an illegal amount of marijuana or a different controlled substance has been found. Otherwise, their search might not have probable cause and could be deemed illegal by a court.

“They’re not being retrained,” Sgt. Keith Cooper, of the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, said. “It’s almost impossible.”

Gregory is determined not to let failed drug test be the final word

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory runs a drill during a minicamp for rookie players Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the team's Valley Ranch practice facility in Irving, Texas. (G.J. McCarthy/The Dallas Morning News) 05102015xSPORTS

The agonizing wait until he hears his name, the way he handles the public flogging brought about by his actions, tells a lot about Randy Gregory.

Randy and his parents return to their Chicago hotel after the first night of the NFL draft. Kenneth and Mary ache for their son. They think back to the moment nearly 16 years earlier when both caught a glimpse of Randy’s love for the sport. The idea of one team after another passing on their son the next night as the cameras capture his reaction to each painful slight is almost too much to take.

Marijuana Prohibition Is Unscientific, Unconstitutional, And Unjust

By Jacob Sullum

Next Thursday I am scheduled to debate Robert White, co-author (with Bill Bennett) of Going to Pot: Why the Rush to Legalize Marijuana Is Harming America, on Glenn Beck’s radio show. Each of us will get half an hour or so to make his case before taking questions from Beck and each other. Here is what I plan to say:

‘We want to make Kentucky synonymous with hemp like Idaho with potatoes,’ ag chief says

The latest hemp update from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture came at a tobacco warehouse where a packed house included former and current tobacco growers. But the irony was lost on no one.

Among those reporting was Agriculture Commissioner James Comer, who told those gathered at the G.F. Vaughan Tobacco Warehouse #23 in Lexington, “We want to make Kentucky synonymous with hemp like Idaho with potatoes.”

Speaker after speaker sang the praises of the crop that is entering season two of research production, including Derek Vaughan, CEO of Vaughan Tobacco.

“You may not believe this, but you’re standing in the heart of hemp country today. No one else is doing what Kentucky is doing.”

Waiting for Health Canada Approval

Two companies ready to produce medical marijuana, but one has laid off staff.

Two major medical marijuana facilities are nearing completion in Kincardine and Hanover -- and both are waiting for the final go-ahead to start production -- but one company has now laid off staff.

In the Kincardine area, AMMCan or Advanced Medical Marijuana Canada has spent over five million dollars preparing the facility at the Bruce Energy Centre off Bruce Road 20 near Lake Huron.

However, President Peter Herburger says the company has been waiting for several months to go to the next step, which would be production of marijuana.

Because the company has been waiting so long, AMMCan has now laid off 15 workers and the executives are staying on the job without any pay.

How to Get Hired to Work in the Medical Cannabis Industry Part 3: Getting Hired as a Grower

Growers are a unique breed, and the best of the bunch are passionate about their garden, highly dependable, and thrive on exposure to new and different horticulture techniques. The grower role is often the most covert position in medical cannabis because their processes are considered trade secrets, and rightfully so -- successfully cultivating cannabis on a large scale is no simple task. There are dozens of factors that have to be perfectly controlled over the approximately 90 day growing cycle. If the environmental controls or nutrient schedule fail for even just a few hours, the entire harvest will be negatively impacted, and in some cases completely lost.

Marijuana 101: Welcome to America's cannabis classes

It’s a rare education seminar that includes this shot across the bow: “Everything and anything we’re talking about today is federally illegal—there is no grey area.” Yet that’s the warning that course facilitator Doug Porter issued to the dozen students attending a one-day workshop held by the Cannabis Career Institute (CCI) at a Baltimore airport hotel on a recent rainy Saturday. “I don’t want you to be negged out by this,” he said. “If you’re crossing your T’s and dotting your I’s, chances are you’ll never spend a day in jail.”
