Chicago businessmen follow promise of medical marijuana

CHICAGO -- Late one Saturday night, Rob Sampson had a confrontation with his 15-year-old daughter about marijuana. But it was his daughter doing the confronting and it was Sampson defending the drug.

Sampson and his wife, after a long night of polishing his new company's applications to grow medical cannabis, returned to their suburban Chicago home to find their daughter waiting up. They hadn't yet told her their business plans.

"She said, 'What is going on?"' Sampson recalled. "'I know something's going on and you guys aren't telling me."'

Nanaimo's mayor says marijuana industry a boon to town's economy

The mayor of Nanaimo says his city is rolling in the dough from a new medical marijuana facility opened by Tilray a year ago

“They are providing jobs out there that are good paying, they’re family incomes. They have hired 95 per cent of their work force [from] local, long-time people,” says Bill McKay.

“It’s just a whole new industry, and there are a lot more of those industries coming, at least we hope so, to Nanaimo.”

McKay says the city has just approved an expansion of the plant, which will let Tilray grow from 50,000 to 250,000 square feet. Currently 115 people are employed at the plant, and Tilray has plans to hire 275 more.

Marijuana trimmers use tiny scissors but eye big careers

Washington's marijuana business has created a legal occupation that offers career opportunities for bud trimmers.

"I've done everything from pumping gas to remodelling houses, but I think there's longevity in this," 32-year-old bud trimmer Kurt Vermillion said.

Bud trimmers make between $12 and $15 an hour and use small scissors to trim away leaves and other things from marijuana buds. Most trimmers work on about half a kilogram of pot per day.

Experienced workers can move up to gardeners or concentrate makers and make $50,000 to $90,000 US a year.

For 37-year-old Julie Whittaker, who started trimming buds in November, the job turned out to be less stressful than her former work in the banking software industry.

THE WATCHDOGS: Pot cops move from fighting drugs to protecting now-legal industry

As cops, part of their jobs was to put away drug sellers and users. Now, former law enforcement officials are doing private security work for Illinois’ now-legal medical marijuana industry.

“I became a policeman in 1968,” says Terrance “Terry” Gainer, a former Chicago homicide detective and chief police legal adviser who went on to lead the Illinois State Police and the U.S. Capitol Police and is now a security adviser for a company that has been granted state permits to grow and sell medical marijuana. “I did not conceive that in the year 2014 I would be working for a company interested in the medical marijuana business.”

Sixteen benefits from the ‘War on Drugs’

It is widely assumed that the so called ‘war on drugs’ (the war between drugs), has been a disastrous failure, and faced with mounting evidence and criticism, governments would eventually seek legislative and policy change. The evidence presented is largely based upon an analysis of the inability of drug prohibition to reduce the supply and demand for banned substances, supplemented by a critique outlining the widespread harms caused by prohibition.

OrganiGram Holdings Inc. is a licensed marijuana grower in Moncton, New Brunswick. They are the only company of their kind east of Ottawa and employ almost 30 people.

CEO Denis Arsenault says that their success is due in part to the company’s all organic policy. “We feel very comfortable that at the end of the day in terms of the quality of the product in term of the user experience, we’ll be superior with an organic product,” said Arsenault.

Since opening in March of 2014, the company has been growing. They recently moved into a larger location and are looking to almost double their staff.

Inside A Cannabis Chocolate Factory: Production Lines Are Going Seven Days A Week

In a squat pale generic-looking building away from a main road in the industrial neighborhood of Seattle, a man picks up small bits of crystalized cannabis oil with a pair of tweezers, weighs them and places them into clear round containers the width of a quarter. He looks over at the little pile of the crystalized “shatter” he’s working with – it’s worth about $20,000.

Toledo marijuana site owner selected

A Cincinnati developer will be the primary owner of the Toledo marijuana-growing facility if Ohio voters approve a proposed marijuana legalization amendment, the campaign announced today.

David Bastos, a partner with Capital Investment Group Inc., is the lead investor in the firm that will own 6070 Hagman Rd. in North Toledo.

The 28.5-acre site, now a corn field with a house, will be one of 10 marijuana “grows” allowed in the state under an amendment to the Ohio Constitution, if voters approve in the Nov. 3 election. All 10 locations, which will grow marijuana and sell it to manufacturers, medical dispensaries, and marijuana retailers, are already identified, by parcel number, in the proposed amendment.
