Looking to work for a medical or retail dispensary in Colorado? Cannabis business owners aren’t the only ones who get to pay licensing fees to the Colorado Department of Revenue Marijuana Enforcement Division; employees of both medical and retail dispensaries must pay application fees for the privilege to wear state-issued identification badges. The badges are backed up by fingerprints and background checks, but for the people looking for jobs created by legalized marijuana, it takes money to make money.

A Wisconsin lawmaker says the state should legalize marijuana to reduce crime and improve the state's economy.

Rep. Melissa Sargent, a Madison Democrat, introduced a bill Monday that would legalize marijuana for medicinal and recreational purposes.

In a news conference Monday Sargent said that legalizing the drug would reduce crime associated with growing and selling cannabis and create jobs.

But the bill will likely go up in smoke. Republicans control both chambers and don't seem eager to support the measure.

Gov. Scott Walker last spring signed into law a measure that permits the use of marijuana derivatives to treat certain medical disorders. His spokeswoman, Laurel Patrick, said Walker opposes legalization and sees marijuana as a gateway drug.

Nearly 80 years since the United States effectively declared marijuana an illegal drug, support for legalization is spreading like a weed.

In the past three years, voters in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and the District of Columbia have voted to allow the recreational use of pot.

This year, Ohio voters will likely be asked to join the cannabis cavalcade.

That proposal, generated by a group calling itself ResponsibleOhio, is well into the signature-gathering process. Given its resources, estimated at more than $40 million, gathering signatures will likely not be its hardest task.

The ResponsibleOhio plan would allow adults 21 and older to possess an ounce of pot and grow up to four plants.

The UpTake: Legalizing marijuana could result in a $4.1 billion Ohio industry by 2020. Those are serious numbers for those advocating for the state to join the ranks of those that already permit pot.

I an James, architect of a proposal to legalize pot in Ohio, said it stemmed from a simple notion: "Let's take this from the tie-dye to the suit-and-tie approach to marijuana."

James, CEO of the Strategy Network, a Columbus political consulting firm, turned to Cincinnati lawyer Chris Stock for help. Would Stock draft a proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution that would outline how pot would be regulated for personal and medical use? "I've never used marijuana in my life," Stock told James. "I'm not sure I want to be involved." But he relented.

EAST ST. LOUIS — The metro-east’s first medical marijuana farm is set to be housed in a vacant U.S. Cellular switching station just south of where Interstate 70 crosses the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge into St. Louis.

At 737 Locust Ave., the site covers 6.7 acres at the end of an unpaved road that stretches nearly half a mile from Illinois 3. The site, which is bounded by railroad tracks on the west and an entry ramp to I-70 under construction to the north, is heavily wooded and home to local wildlife, including turkeys.

The Town of Innisfil will now have more say as to where potential medical marijuana production facilities can set up shop in the municipality.

Councillors approved the final town-wide provisions for Health Canada licensed medical marijuana production facilities in committee-of-the-whole Wednesday night, in a record vote of 7-2.

The vote was the culmination of approximately 300 staff hours in drafting the provisions, which featured countless public meetings and presentations to council since early 2014.
