Colorado bill banning welfare card use at pot shop ATMs heads to gov’s desk

Legislation that would prohibit welfare cards at Colorado marijuana dispensary ATMs or strip clubs has been sent to Gov. John Hickenlooper for action.

The Senate passed the bill Tuesday on a 23-12 vote.

Many dispensary ATMs are already set up to decline the electronic benefit cards, known as EBTs. But lawmakers say legislation is needed to ensure there’s no misuse and to avoid possible federal sanctions.

Some Democrats opposed the bill, saying it’s not clear that the misuse of the cards is widespread.

The bill doesn’t give the state a way to monitor ATM use for compliance. But a separate pending bill that also seeks to restrict the use of welfare cards does have an enforcement mechanism.

New Zealand Is Suffering from a Severe Weed Shortage

New Zealand is suffering its worst weed drought in recent history, and so far pot-starved kiwis have no one to point the finger at. The current shortage began at the start of the year, with parts of the South Island and upper North Island seemingly affected the worst. One grower from South Island's east coast Waimate district told media earlier this month it's the most severe shortage they had seen in 15 years, and that it was a "nightmare for consumers," who were struggling to buy weed at any price.

Women's marijuana event 'a Tupperware party for cannabis'

Karen Wagner shows Sexxpot marijuana during a sample and share cannabis product party in San Francisco, Calif., on Wednesday, March 25, 2015.

In a Russian Hill apartment, 17 women passed around cannabis-infused gluten-free vegan blueberry almond granola and rubbed marijuana-based topical cream into their shoulders.

The attendees — lawyers and chefs and nurses and tech executives among them — inhaled from vaporizers and erupted in laughter when a woman lauded the aphrodisiac wonders of Sexxpot, a new strain of Humboldt County-grown herb that she recently smoked with her husband.

Illinois Training event helps job seekers in medicinal marijuana industry

A thick line of people formed inside a Doubletree hotel Saturday afternoon, all of them waiting to learn if they had earned the distinction of certified budtender, one of many titles for a person who works behind the counter at a medicinal marijuana dispensary.

Hemp Staff, a Florida-based company that aims to educate, certify and assist jobseekers in the medicinal marijuana industry, hosted two sold-out budtender training and certification sessions Saturday morning and afternoon at the hotel in Rosemont.

Though marijuana is still illegal under federal law, a state pilot program that took effect last year has allowed for up to 21 cultivation centers and 60dispensaries to grow and sell medicinal marijuana in Illinois.

Investment Opportunities In The Marijuana Business

Hundreds of Millions of dollars are pouring into the legal (or at least semi-legal) marijuana industry. Is it too much investment for the market potential? Here are the critical issues to consider.

Current Marijuana Users Already Have Their Suppliers

Let’s say that you smoke or otherwise consume marijuana with some regularity, at least once a month. You have a source. It’s always a challenge to get a buyer of any product to change to a new seller. Very few current users will be eager to switch just because the old supplier is not legal.

Smoking pot in D.C. could cost Va. workers their jobs

You can go for a ride with the Pineapple Express - or any other strain of cannabis - while visiting friends in D.C., but you might get fired from work back home in Virginia as a result.

Legalized marijuana is closer than ever, now that adults can smoke, grow and share it in the nation's capital. But some local companies are sticking with tests that screen employees for the drug because it's still illegal in Virginia.

A local employment law expert said businesses must be more cautious about dismissing workers for positive drug tests now that marijuana is legal in some parts of the country - but users with a prescription likely have more protection than those who smoke just because, well, they like getting high.
