Storefront pot shops still uncertain even with Liberals’ legalization push

One of the incoming Liberal government’s more high-profile campaign planks is its plan to legalize recreational marijuana use, which raises the spectre that Vancouver’s ubiquitous – and, at least for now, illegal – pot shops could soon bloom across the country.

But long-time MP and recent Liberal health critic Hedy Fry said any move to allow storefront sales of cannabis – whether at retail shops or pharmacies, or both – would need approval from an upcoming task force comprising municipal, provincial and federal politicians, law enforcement, and public health and addiction experts.

Trudeau win yields actual marijuana prize for treasure hunt

TORONTO -

There may be more adult treats than tricks on Halloween afternoon now that the Liberals are in power.

Chris — who doesn’t publicly reveal his surname — of Juju Joints, is organizing the third annual Haunted Halloween Marijuana Treasure Hunt on Oct. 31 in High Park in order to spread awareness of easier access to medical marijuana.

While participants won’t find any joints in the park, the hunt will yield $50,000 in certificates for marijuana cigarettes that can be redeemed at Chris’ downtown dispensary for anyone 19 and older.

Chris said since Justin Trudeau was elected the next prime minister, he’ll give away marijuana to any adult, even those without a medical marijuana licence.

Treatwell: Food as Medicine

Alison Ettel can attest to the healing powers of cannabis. You’d never know it by sight, but the bright, bubbly young woman behind TreatWell had a near-death experience a few years ago. While she had never tried cannabis prior and hasn’t since, using marijuana as a medicine during her recovery changed her life.

Today's Weed Really Is Not 'Your Father's Marijuana'

Really? We needed science to tell us this?

One of the favorite claims of opponents of marijuana legalization is that pot today "is not your father's marijuana"—it is instead much stronger, and therefore, the unspoken corollary implies, somehow more dangerous. It increasingly looks like those folks are correct about pot being stronger, but off the mark when it comes to it being riskier.

8 things you didn’t know about hemp

Early last year, Congress passed a Farm Bill authorizing a wide range of federal agricultural programs.

Tucked away in that legislation was an amendment granting states and universities the right to research a plant that has long been banned from cultivation in the United States — hemp.

Hemp production was banned throughout the United States in 1937, with the passing of the Marihuana Tax Act. Two weeks ago, North Carolina’s House and Senate passed a bill that would legalize the production of industrial hemp in the state.

Ohio You Decide 2015: Marijuana issues on ballot explained

CLEVELAND - In two weeks, you will decide at the polls whether to legalize marijuana in Ohio.

So, do you know exactly what you'll be deciding?

Supporters say a "yes" vote means you'll be voting to control what's already here.

"Marijuana prohibition has failed," says Ian James, the Executive Director of Responsible Ohio, the group behind the legalization push.

"You can get marijuana delivered to your door faster than you can a pizza," he says, "so we need to regulate, test, and tax marijuana.

But opponents says legalization would increase use of pot among teens, and lead to more people being addicted to drugs.

And they also question the way the proposal would limit who could grow pot for legal sale in Ohio.
