Bob Marley's band 'The Wailers' talk about music, marijuana and the artist himself!

Bob Marley's band The Wailers performs in India this month. Amrita Madhukalya speaks to his bandmate Aston Barrett about everything Marley, including marijuana and, of course, reggae

  • Aston Barrett and The Wailers will perform in Shillong and in Kolkata

Bob Marley passed away at the age of 36 in 1981, leaving behind a legacy of music that no other musician could ever replicate. This year's Booker winner, Marlon James's A Brief History of Seven Killings, which tells the story of an assassination attempt on the reggae legend's life, attests to that mystique too. Now, more than three decades after Marley's death, his band, The Wailers, are all set to perform at the NH7 Weekender Festival in India.

Mother of all highs

AT A soirĂ©e on the outskirts of Denver, Colorado, one woman greets her fellow guests with a delicate bowl of vanilla sea-salt caramels, each one laced with marijuana. “It’s quite subtle,” she insists. “I just keep a few in my bag for when I’m feeling stressed out.” Over light chat about family and work, the group quickly cleaned up the bowl.

Recreational Cannabis, the Next Big Social Movement?

Gay marriage, women’s rights, recreational cannabis.

Once taboo topics have slowly etched their way into acceptance in America. What’s crazy is marrying someone of a different race (or same-sex), women gaining the right to vote, and even something as simple as grabbing a beer at a bar at some point in American history seemed like they would never happen.

Five years ago, recreational cannabis could’ve been included.

Now, it could be the next big social issue we’ve seen Americans change their mind about.

Ex-smuggler turned author Howard Marks on living with cancer

Former cannabis smuggler turned author Howard Marks has talked about having no regrets, as his second memoir Mr Smiley: My Last Pill and Testament is published.

Marks, 70, told BBC Wales arts and media correspondent Huw Thomas he is "living rather than dying of cancer" after being diagnosed a year ago.

The Welshman speaks about how after being released from a US prison in 1995 he looked at becoming involved in ecstasy in Spain but was concerned about the purity of the drug he came across.

Marks, now living in a small flat in Leeds, discusses his attitudes to drugs and why the legalisation of cannabis "is still the one thing I want to achieve".

Colorado reports uptick in marijuana-related driving offenses in 2014

A majority of tickets for driving under the influence in Colorado involved marijuana in 2014, according to new law enforcement statistics released in September.

The Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area is a collection of federal, state and local law enforcement in four states. Colorado is the only one with legal recreational marijuana, so a new report from the agencies focus on its impact on the state.

In Denver, impaired driving tickets involving marijuana doubled from 33 to 66 in one year. The Colorado State Patrol reported that 77 percent of its cases involved marijuana.

However, only 41 percent -- 354 out of 874 of all impaired drivers tested positive for marijuana alone.

Brennan Linsley/AP

In a national health survey, 10% of high schoolers reported smoking marijuana at least once in the last 30 days.

High schoolers now report using marijuana more than cigarettes or cigars, according to a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released Oct. 15.

In 1997, 21% of high schoolers said they had smoked a cigarette or cigar on one or more days in the last 30 days. By 2013 (the newest data available), only 7% said they had, representing a remarkable 64% decrease.

Council nixes ‘Green Light District’ for Portland

City Commissioner Dan Saltzman wants Portland to start raking in money from pot-smoking tourists. Now that recreational marijuana is legal, he’s pushing for a Green Light district.

The commissioner introduced his plan during a city council meeting on Wednesday.

City regulations currently require marijuana dispensaries to be separated by at least 1,000 feet. Saltzman wants to waive that restriction in the downtown and Lloyd District area.
