Swedish 'cannabis fika' lands guests in hospital

What was supposed to be a friendly Swedish-style 'fika' turned into drama when a man poisoned his two guests with a chocolate mud cake laced with cannabis.

If you have Swedish friends, you have probably one time or another been invited over to someone's house for a traditional 'fika'. This usually involves things like coffee and cake. It usually does not include drugs.

But a 25-year-old in the Södervärn area of Malmö, southern Sweden, is now being investigated by police after he served a cake seasoned with the drug to his two friends, a 55-year-old woman, and a 45-year-old man.

On Tuesday evening police received a call from the hospital from the confused male guest saying that he had been poisoned.

Prohibition of medicinal cannabis 'a mystery to all reasonable people'

Of course we should have legal access to cannabis for medicinal use in New Zealand. That it is still prohibited, at all, is a mystery to all reasonable people.

Estimates from the latest New Zealand Health Department surveyshow the number of adults aged 15 and over that used cannabis in the past year is 11 per cent. This figure has remained stable for many years.

One in three of those adults said they used cannabis weekly; that's nearly 150,000 people. Some surveys suggest that there may be 70,000 daily users.

Donald Trump: Where 2016 Candidate Stands on Gun Control, Marijuana and Immigration

Billionaire investor Donald Trump has offered his unbridled remarks on everything from Mexican immigration to Sen. John McCain's military career and mocked or attacked several of his presidential running mates, but, as political experts have pointed out, the White House hopeful has offered little so far in the way of actual policy platforms.

Here's where Trump stands on three of the leading issues of our time: marijuana, gun control and immigration.

On marijuana legalization

Despite having called for the legalization of all drugs 25 years ago, Trump most recently said he didn't like the idea of legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes, but basically said it should be up to states to decide.

Summer surge of synthetic marijuana causes overdoses

Synthetic marijuana is flooding the streets of major U.S. cities this summer, causing a surge in overdoses and, according to some police officials, a rise in violent crime.

The situation has become urgent enough that police chiefs meeting in Washington this week called for development of field tests that can help police quickly figure out suspects on the synthetic marijuana.

Sold in slickly marketed packets with names like K2, Scooby Snax and Spice, the drugs are made up of a variety of chemicals and have little to do with marijuana.

The chemicals found in the packets vary -- even identically branded packages often contain vastly different ingredients -- and users likely have no idea what they're smoking.

How Legal Pot Benefits Society

Although more time and research is needed, legalized marijuana seems to be having some undeniably positive effects on our entire society.

When contemplating the evolving consequences of marijuana legalization, it's helpful to think about tradeoffs. Now that this "social experiment" is almost two years old, we're starting to see signs that the influx of legal pot in Colorado and elsewhere may actually be helping remedy some far more serious societal problems than weed could ever cause.
