Colorado probationers grapples with new marijuana law

For 15 years, medical marijuana has been legal in Colorado — but not for those on probation. The law has been tested at legal heights reaching the Colorado Court of Appeals. In the 2012 case People v. Watkins, the court ruled that offenses found to be illegal under federal law qualify as violations of probation. It also ruled that no Colorado law protects against prohibiting probationers from using pot — not even Amendment 20, which legalized medical use of marijuana in 2000.

DPTV: Activists share plan for Denver pot consumption and more

The same activists who in 2012 successfully legalized the cultivation, sale and use of recreational marijuana in Colorado have started their next big initiative: The push to allow pot consumption in places now off limits.

Activists want a measure on the November 2015 Denver ballot that asks voters to OK allowing marijuana consumption in commercial establishments, including bars and clubs, that meet certain guidelines.

They hope to get the question approved by the clerk and recorder’s office and gather more than 4,700 signatures before summer’s end.

The Many Faces of Marijuana Advocacy

In the simplest terms, an advocate is a champion for a cause—a person or a group of people with the goal of influencing a larger population, be it on an economic scale, political scale or just to sway public opinion. Groups advocating for marijuana legalization seem to be making headway, though the current state of marijuana’s legality is anything but a sure thing.

INDUSTRIAL HEMP PLANTED IN CHRISTIAN COUNTY

More than 100 acres of industrial hemp will emerge during the next week after being planted Friday and Tuesday near Pembroke and Crofton. Kendall Clark and farm employee Landon Hopper used a Kubota tractor and a modified Kinze planter Tuesday to plant 95 acres of industrial hemp at Clark's Oak Lane farm. Clark says he decided to start out a little bigger than some farmers.

Clark says planting went well, but there were a few challenges he had to overcome to use a traditional planter.

Industrial hemp advocate Katie Moyer says it is exciting to see more than 100 acres of industrial planted in Christian County.

Hemp Historian Arinon Compass of Florida says Kentucky is at a critical stage in the reintroduction of industrial hemp in the United States.

Austin police confiscating more marijuana edibles

FILE - This April 18, 2014 file photo shows edible marijuana products on display at a medical marijuana dispensary in Denver. Colorado's marijuana experiment is under threat by the very popularity of eating it instead of smoking it, so the pot industry is joining health officials and state regulators in studying the problem of consumers eating too much too quickly. They plan to meet Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Children's Hospital Colorado to discuss the potency and serving size of pot edibles. (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski, File) Related Coverage
