PINON HILLS: Outdoor marijuana grow uprooted, plants seized

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday uprooted an outdoor marijuana growing operation in Piñon Hills, a rural area of the county near Phelan.

Around 300 plants, some as tall as four feet, were seized and one person was arrested.

The suspect, 33-year-old Mexican national Bulmaro Arreola, was identified by police as a caretaker who was hired to watch over and tend to the plants. He was booked on suspicion of cultivating marijuana.

Police said the grow was not in compliance with the state's medical marijuana laws and it violated the county's prohibition on outdoor cultivation operations.

Monterey considers regulating the medical marijuana industry from farm to consumer

Monterey County Supervisor John Phillips chuckles when he talks about his interest in regulating and protecting the medical cannabis industry. He admits it’s a little weird for someone like him – a Republican ex-prosecutor – to take up the cause.

But since taking office in January, Phillips has heard from a number of constituents and their representatives, asking for a county policy on pot. “Some of them were pretty credible people,” Phillips says.

One was PR strategist David Armanasco, who’s repping growers (although he won’t say who). “They believe there are areas in the Salinas Valley that will be good for cultivation of medical marijuana,” he says.

Cannabis group seeks public input on large scale cultivation ordinance

The nonprofit organization California Cannabis Voice Humboldt unveiled a draft ordinance nearly a year in the making on Tuesday that would regulate medical cannabis cultivation in Humboldt County on parcels larger than five acres.

Standing on the Humboldt County Superior Courthouse steps before a host of supporters, community officials and passersby, CCVH Executive Director Richard Marks called upon growers and non-growers alike to help “create a new future” for the county.

“This community has come to the table, has come out of the shadows, has come into the light and said it’s time to move forward,” Marks said. “And to be honest, it hasn’t been easy and it hasn’t been without tremendous risk. But it hasn’t been in vain. People have listened.”

Here's What Marijuana Does to Breast Cancer

It's not necessarily news that cannabis may be helpful in treating cancer, specifically breast cancer, but research is building to support that theory. Now, researchers are gaining a more nuanced understanding of how cannabis can help treat these cancers.

According to research from the California Pacific Medical Research Center published last year, CBD, the non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, can help inhibit metastasis in breast cancer cells. Metastasis is a tumor's ability to spread throughout the body.

"We have found [CBD] inhibits key genes involved in tumor progression and metastasis," Dr. Sean McAllister, a lead research in the study, told ATTN:.

Backers of California pot-legalization ballot measure given OK to get signatures

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - Supporters of a California ballot initiative to legalize marijuana for recreational use may begin gathering signatures to place it before voters in 2016, a state official said on Monday.

The proposal is the latest of four marijuana-related initiatives vying for a spot on the ballot at a time when many believe the most populous U.S. state is on track to join Colorado, Washington, Alaska and Oregon in legalizing recreational pot.

Legal sale of marijuana for recreational use in Oregon is set to begin on Wednesday.
