Legalizing marijuana in California: Proposition 64 is complicated, but highly likely to pass

I know you’ve been distracted/disgusted/gobsmacked by the presidential campaign all summer.

But history, polling and common sense tell us that California’s electoral votes already belong to Hillary Clinton (sorry, Donald Trump fans). So stop wasting time worrying about that, Golden State types, and turn your attention to the doorstop of a ballot that you’ll be facing when you vote Nov. 8.

This year, 17 measures qualified for the statewide ballot. There is something for everyone to get worked up about: prescription drug prices, the minimum wage, background checks for ammunition purchases, plastic bags, the death penalty — and something I really wish I didn’t have to think about, mandatory condoms for porn shoots.

High Times gains Hollywood representation in first for weed industry

United Talent Agency is now representing the marijuana industry’s pre-eminent media and events company, High Times.

The partnership makes High Times the first significant marijuana-centric company to gain representation from a major Hollywood talent agency, a further step in overcoming the stigma surrounding the plant. High Times Chief Revenue Officer Matt Stang said it’s time has come.

“The rest of the world is finally coming to where we’ve been for more than 40 years,” Stang said. “Cannabis is a mainstream topic, it’s not something that’s bad or wrong anymore.”

United Talent Agency (UTA) declined to comment on the signing.

This Marijuana Millionaire is the Great Gatsby of Ganja

We’re somewhere near the crest of Mulholland Drive and the City of Los Angeles sparkles below us. Stretched across the long, flawless astroturf that blankets the yard, there are booths serving all you can eat carnival treats: funnel cake, garlic fries, Italian ice. Large green and purple globes cast their glow everywhere. It’s neither dark nor light. A woman suspended in a giant chandelier stretches in its arms, and reaches down to pour champagne for anyone who wants it. Performers on stilts with phantasmagorical masks slink through the crowd and the clouds of marijuana smoke. Trays of thick joints are passed like hors d’oeuvres. Torches hiss and a woman wonders out loud as she waits in line for a wax hit: “Who’s paying for all this?”

Why Marijuana Legalization Campaigns Could Fail in 2016

This was supposed to be the year of Pot-Palooza, when five states are set to hold ballot initiatives that would make marijuana legal for recreational users. If all passed, it would bring the number of states offering pot for sale to nine, following similar measures that passed in Colorado and Washington in 2012 and in Alaska and Oregon in 2014.

California Has Arrested Almost Half a Million People for Weed in the Last 10 Years

A new report released by the Drug Policy Alliance Thursday reveals that nearly 500,000 people have been arrested on charges related to marijuana in the last decade. Nearly 9,000 felony arrests related to weed were made in 2015 alone in California, according to the report. Most disturbingly, the report found that black and Latino people are much more likely to be arrested for marijuana in California.

Official: California wildfire in 2015 originated in illegal marijuana grow

A fire that destroyed 43 homes last year in a largely rural area north of San Francisco was sparked by an illegal marijuana growing operation, officials said Wednesday, while the two suspects fled the country before they could be questioned.

The Rocky fire burned about 108 square miles in Lake, Yolo and Colusa counties, destroying 43 homes and 53 outbuildings before it was contained.

It began near where firefighters are currently battling an unrelated fire that investigators say was caused by a serial arsonist.

Last year’s fire was started by a faulty water heater near where about 100 marijuana plants were being grown east of Clearlake, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman Janet Upton.

California: Santa Rosa Invites Marijuana Businesses to Step out of the Shadows

Larry Schaeffer has grown marijuana in Sonoma County for more than a decade.

His Cherry Kola Farms outside Penngrove supplies award-winning strains of pungent pot to one of Sonoma County’s largest medical cannabis collectives, as well as discerning dispensaries around the state.

But after years of operating in a quasi-legal status as a nonprofit collective, Schaeffer is ready to go legit. He wants to be an above-board business, in an approved location with proper permits, and pay taxes like any other legitimate enterprise.

And he plans to do it in Santa Rosa.

“Santa Rosa wants this industry here,” Schaeffer said. “I think this is probably going to be the New Age Amsterdam.”
