Culinary and Cannabis Food and Wine Festival Hammered a Nail in the Pot-Stigma Coffin

Nearly 30 cannabis companies and 200 eager guests gathered over the weekend at the Venue at Three Petals in Huntington Beach for Culinary and Cannabis—OC’s first marijuana-infused food and wine event. The concept was to showcase that it’s possible to use cannabis in gourmet meals without lessening the integrity of the food. But it also extended to more than just solid foods. There were vendors handing out cannabis beverages including CBD wine and effervescent mineral CBD water. Vendors sold eggless, pre-made medicated cookie dough, offered sign-up forms for marijuana subscription boxes, and handed out samples of cannabis infused topical products.

Los Angeles Poised to Ditch Proposed Cannabis Tax for Homeless Services

Less than two weeks after Los Angeles County supervisors agreed to move forward with a 10 percent tax on cannabis businesses in order to fund homeless services, the proposal’s author wants to shelve the plan.

Late last week Supervisor Shiela Kuehl moved to pull the measure from November ballots, explaining that there had been “a good deal of ambivalence” about the tax from social service providers. Drumming up enough support for the proposal — which would require a two-thirds supermajority among voters — would be a long shot, Keuhl said.

Marijuana Aids Sonoma County Alzheimer's Patients

Marijuana can make life better for some of the more than 5 million Americans afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, but despite an encouraging new study, it remains a long shot as an antidote to the brain disorder that claims about 85,000 lives a year, experts say.

Some assisted-living facilities and physicians in Sonoma County are quietly administering medical marijuana to patients — with consent from legally responsible parties — for behavioral management, quelling aggression and agitation in people who are losing recognition of their surroundings.

The concept is to find and fund early-stage companies with ideas that can assist the state’s dispensaries and growers. That could range from water conservation tools to more optimal packaging; payroll software to analytics.

Key Players Seek to Shape Future of Cannabis Industry

Personalities and group dynamics can push decisions.

Laws now proposed could, in the next year, allow cannabis to become a fully sanctioned industry in Calaveras County that contributes an estimated $15 million to $20 million a year in local taxes. Another proposal could ban the industry.

Although every county voter will get a say, a much smaller number of individuals and groups are shaping the public debate. Here’s a look at them.

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors is a five-person board and it is the authority that can make local laws concerning registration and enforcement of commercial, caregiver and personal cultivation of cannabis.

Not All California Pot Growers Favor Proposition 64

Now that the state of California has approved a ballot initiative (called Proposition 64) that would legalize marijuana for recreational use, the state’s already-booming marijuana growing industry is split nearly evenly on whether or not to support it.

At first glance, legalizing marijuana for adult recreational use would appear to be a large benefit to the state’s pot growers, many of whom raise the plant on small farms along the north coast in Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity counties. These growers have long supported decriminalization of marijuana, but fear the full legalization will encourage large corporations to enter the cannabis-farming business, driving out small operations.
