Budding Movements in Canada and US Vow to Bring 'Sacrament' of Cannabis to the Masses

After suffering a serious injury in a house fire more than four years ago, Robin Douglas was confined to a wheelchair and thought he would never walk again.

Depression and hopelessness took over. When he tried to kill himself, he knew he'd hit rock bottom.

That's when he turned to marijuana for salvation. A few months later, he no longer needed the wheelchair.

"My mind, body and spirit was healed." Douglas, 57, told VICE News Thursday from White Rock, British Columbia. "And every time I met with like-minded people who helped me use cannabis, we would smoke or eat it and be able to see things clearly."

Health officials discussed legalization of marijuana across BC

As Vancouver struggled to regulate its explosion of marijuana dispensaries, top provincial health officials considered how they could legalize the recreational use of the drug across British Columbia.

In a series of e-mails released through a Freedom of Information request, the health officials acknowledged there would likely be little progress toward legalization while the staunchly anti-drug Conservatives hold power in Ottawa, instead suggesting such a radical change would likely come about only if the Liberals win the fall election.

Federal Court certifies suit alleging Ottawa violated medical marijuana users' privacy

HALIFAX - The Federal Court of Canada has certified a class action started on behalf of medical marijuana licensees alleging that Health Canada violated their privacy.

The plaintiffs allege in a news release that Health Canada sent notices to over 40,000 participants of the Marihuana Medical Access Program advising them of changes to regulations governing the use of medical marijuana.

They say the envelopes sent in November 2013 made clear they were sent by the program, and therefore failed to protect the identity of the recipients.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages for breach of contract, breach of confidence, invasion of privacy and Charter violations.

The allegations haven't been proven in court.
