The province had 1,468 licensed stores open as of May 2, with another 445 active store authorization applications under review.

Ontario’s Liberal Party is promising to crack down on the ballooning number of cannabis stores if elected, CityNews has learned.

The Liberals say they would require a minimum distance between pot shops. There are currently no provincial restrictions on cannabis store density, although Ontario does mandate a minimum distance of 150 metres between retail stores and schools. The Liberals say they would model their plan after that 150 metre distance.

“In recent years, Ontario’s downtowns and main streets have been flooded by new cannabis stores, crowding out other small businesses,” the party said in a statement to CityNews.

Leamington's mayor wants the federal government to step in with stricter laws

Farm workers in southwestern Ontario may unknowingly be participating in illegal cannabis operations that are requiring significant police resources to shut them down, according to provincial police.

In the last three years, nine large-scale police operations in Leamington have targeted the illegal production of cannabis, with about $10 million in illicit drugs seized in the process, OPP said. 

"While millions of dollars of illegally grown cannabis has been seized within the town of Leamington, we see the strengthening, unfortunately, of organized crime entities throughout the area," Insp. Glenn Miller said during a presentation given to Leamington council Tuesday.

According a press release from Superette, this is the first time DoorDash will be handling cannabis orders. The Smiths Falls, Ontario company said that the impacted workers span its operations across Canada, Europe, and the U.S., with the Canadian portion located mainly in Ontario.

The job cuts are a key piece of the cost-cutting plan that will also see the company retool its facilities, review procurement strategies, implement flexible manufacturing processes, and reduce third-party professional and office fees.
