Cannabis firm seeks creditor protection amid 'critical cash shortage'

cannabis field

A Southwestern Ontario pot producer that bills itself as Canada’s first female-focused cannabis company filed for creditor protection as it faces a “critical cash shortage.”

An Ontario court has approved a request by Eve and Co., a licensed cannabis grower that operates a massive greenhouse in Strathroy, to sell assets and seek investment after it was granted protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA).

“The creditor protection is kind of a temporary holding status,” said Michael Armstrong, a professor at Brock University’s Goodman school of business who studies the cannabis industry.

"None of the illegal samples came close to delivering what was advertised on the label"

A new study comparing illicit cannabis products to their legal counterparts has found lower than advertised levels of THC in unregulated products and pesticide levels that are several hundred times above Health Canada’s limits.

The study was conducted by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) on behalf of the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

The study examined 44 edible cannabis products, split evenly between regulated and unregulated. The illicit products were seized during OPP investigations.

Researchers found, on average, that unregulated edibles contained less than 20 per cent of their advertised THC content.

Can municipalities do anything about the number of cannabis shops popping up everywhere?

cannabis shop

Nowadays, you can't walk very far down the streets of downtown Toronto, and likely other major cities, without seeing a cannabis store. A product that was illegal a short time ago is now widely available to the public. Before January 22, 2019, municipalities could opt out of cannabis retail stores within their municipal boundaries.1 Some of those that haven't are left wondering what their options are.

Can municipalities do anything about the volume and density of cannabis shops showing up everywhere? In short, while they can have their concerns heard, their right to be heard doesn't mean they have a right to be obeyed.

Meet the Keralites who run cannabis 'Hempire' in Canada

store

There is no country where a Keralite does not reach, there is no job that a Keralites do not do ... These words represent the working consciousness of a Malayali. Here is one such story about the cannabis business being run by two young Malayalis in Canada.

There is an old joke that when Neil Armstrong first set foot on the Moon, he was given a cup of tea by a Malayalee tea shop owner. Although the joke about Malayalees and its variations spread across the world, there are often times when one may just believe a story or two. Take the case of Kiran and Ananthu. They are the heroes of a similar story. These two young Malayalee men have started a successful business venture in Canada -- selling cannabis.
