Madison marijuana start-up investors headed to prison

An investment plan hatched among a group of high-achieving Madison high school and college friends has begun to pay new dividends: federal prison sentences.

That’s because the plan, administered by UW-Madison business students or graduates, involved driving to California at least 19 times with bundles of cash to buy hundreds of pounds of marijuana for sale to customers and “investors” in Madison, according to federal prosecutors.

Seven men were charged in U.S. District Court last spring with conspiring to buy, transport and deliver marijuana in loads varying from 5 to 50 pounds, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert A. Anderson. All pleaded guilty.

“Most of them were business students, smart kids who saw a business they wanted to profit from,” he said.

CannaCon: Bringing the Cannabis Industry into the Business World

One of the hardest things to do is change a stereotype – no matter how much evidence there is to the contrary. Everyone still knows one infamous character from a TV show, a movie, or something of the like that fits the bill for the stereotype, and it tends to stick.

In the world of marijuana, that stereotype would be the classic lazy stoner. The guy with the bloodshot eyes, long scraggly hair, and a vacant stare sitting in the back of the classroom; or the hippy with the guitar singing about flower power or whatever.

The point is – marijuana has been given a bad rep. While we can’t do anything to change the propaganda of the past, we can at least show that that is not a “standard” for what it means to be a stoner.

Marijuana paraphernalia won't be a crime in Maryland

Having a marijuana pipe or rolling papers won't be a crime in Maryland any longer.

The General Assembly, led by Democrats, overturned five of Republican Gov. Larry Hogan's vetoes on Thursday. One result is that a bill making possession of drug paraphernalia a civil offense and setting a fine for smoking marijuana in public will become law.

A Brief History Of Medical Cannabis: From Ancient Anesthesia To The Modern Dispensary

For many decades in the U.S., marijuana has been painted as the psychedelic drug of hippies and stoners who lay around smoking dope to the detriment of their cognitive function. This image of marijuana use can certainly be attributed to one aspect of its culture, but Cannabis — a category of plants that include three species and seven sub-species — have been used in medicine for thousands of years.

First Look at the Smokin' Gun, Colorado's Next Major Marijuana Tourist Attraction

The forty-foot-high Willie Nelson statue has yet to appear on the edge of Colorado Boulevard — but that could only be a matter of time.

Because otherwise, the construction crew is putting the finishing touches on what promises to soon become one of metro Denver’s top tourist attractions: The Smokin’ Gun.

Yes, it’s a recreational marijuana store — but not just any recreational marijuana store.

For starters, this store is in Glendale, which means it can stay open until midnight — unlike Denver pot shops just across the street, which must close at 7 p.m.

Md. Lawmakers Override Veto Of Marijuana Paraphernalia Bill

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The Maryland General Assembly overrode several of Gov. Larry Hogan’s vetoes on Thursday, including his veto of a bill decriminalizing the possession of marijuana paraphernalia and another to ensure third-party travel websites pay all of the state’s sales tax.

Both the Senate and the House, which are controlled by Democrats, also had the three-fifths majority needed to override the Republican governor’s veto of a bill to create a $300 threshold before authorities can seize money in criminal procedures and a separate veto that blocked $2 million for an arts facility in Anne Arundel County.

Marijuana and Health: Five New Scientific Developments You Need to Know

Here's the latest research on pot and drinking, pot and opiate dependency, pot and IQ, pot and migraines, and pot and obesity.

Scientific discoveries are published almost daily rebuking  the federal government’s contention that cannabis is a highly dangerous substance lacking therapeutic efficacy. But most of these findings are relegated to obscure, peer-reviewed journals and, therefore, often go unnoticed by the major media and the general public. Here are five new cannabis-centric studies that warrant mainstream attention.

Chandler Jones episode shows NFL policy on marijuana makes no sense

NFL players are banned from taking medical marijuana – so instead they’re taking a harmful synthetic version. It could be the league’s next big headache

The mood around Foxboro, Massachusetts improved significantly last weekend, thanks to the New England Patriots regaining their home dominance. The Pats beat the Kansas City Chiefs 27-20 to ensure a fifth consecutive trip to their conference’s championship game, a remarkable feat matched only in NFL history by the 1973-77 Oakland Raiders. The scoreline flattered the visitors: Tom Brady and his offense shook off any concerns and coach Bill Belichick conducted another display of defensive wizardry.
